Doctors at the Mayo Clinic say that warming up a sore back provides 33% more pain relief than taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen… And it often works within about 20 minutes. That’s because – according to inflammation expert and biochemist Dr. Barry Sears – heat relaxes tight muscles, increases blood flow to injured tissues, and flushes out pain-triggering compounds.

So, heat up your back by taking a steamy bath, or using a hot water bottle, heat wraps, or an electric heating pad. And get ready for some relief!

The new go-to physical therapy tool is a lacrosse ball. Michelle Olson, professor of exercise physiology at Auburn University, says lacrosse balls are the perfect size and shape for pressing into muscle knots, and reducing inflammation. Just place a lacrosse ball – or a tennis ball – against the wall, and roll your sore spots back and forth on top of it – and in circles. It may hurt a little at first, but then your muscles should release.

People who drink between 2 and 7 glasses of wine a week are 32% less likely to suffer from depression. That’s because wine reduces inflammation – and inflammation in the brain has been shown to contribute to depression. Of course, if you think you’re clinically depressed – don’t grab a box of wine and hope it’ll go away. But if you enjoy a glass of wine with dinner each night, that could be the reason you’re not prone to blue moods.

It seems like there’s a new “superfood” in the news every week.

But I have a list of superfoods that live up to their hype. These are the real deal… And according to certified nutrition and fitness expert JJ Virgin, they really do work to keep us healthy and help us lose weight:

•Grass-fed beef. A recent Clemson University study found that, compared to grain-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in nutrients… And it contains double the amount of a fatty acid called C-L-A. That’s important because C-L-A plays a key role in helping the body burn fat and build muscle. Meaning it helps us lose weight, and keep it off.

•Wild-caught salmon. You’ve probably heard us talk about the omega-3s in wild-caught fish, that’s a fatty acid proven to boost heart and brain health. But salmon’s also a good source of selenium, a mineral that helps reduce inflammation.
That helps make our immune system stronger. Plus, studies show a strong link between higher levels of selenium and decreased anxiety and depression.

•Raspberries. Blueberries may get all the attention, but raspberries are higher in fiber. In fact, one cup provides 8 grams of fiber, or about a-quarter of what most adults need for a full day. And a diet high in fiber helps keep our blood sugar level stable, which in turn, reduces our hunger and cravings, so we eat fewer calories.

If you’ve got a scrape, put some honey on it.

honey-scrapes

It’s been used as a remedy for centuries. It contains antibacterial enzymes that kill germs, amino acids that speed healing, and antioxidants that reduce inflammation. The Honey Research Unit in New Zealand recommends warming honey slightly. Then pour one tablespoon onto a sterile gauze pad, and tape it over the cut or scrape.
