When you’re cooped up inside – or your cubicle is making you feel trapped and stir crazy, sniff some rose essential oil. According to neurologists at the Smell & Taste Treatment & Research Foundation, one whiff of rose oil can help you feel calmer and happier for 90 minutes straight. It works by calming the brain’s anxiety center and increasing production of alpha waves, which promote relaxation. So remember, one whiff of rose essential oil and you’ll feel better for the next 90 minutes.

Yes, according to a study from Italy’s Orthopedic Institute. Researchers asked adults prepped for surgery to sniff essential oils. Those who smelled eucalyptus felt much calmer than those sniffing citrus, or plain unscented air. The reason? Eucalyptus or “gum” trees – contain a compound that cuts production of the stress hormone cortisol. And the benefits of eucalyptus kick in within FIVE MINUTES of your first whiff! So, next time you feel nervous, sniff your stress away with eucalyptus essential oil.

When participants in a recent study spent as little as ten minutes inhaling the fragrance of citrus fruit, they saw a significant increase in their overall mood – which included a DECREASE in their levels of tension, anxiety, depression, confusion, fatigue and anger.

So, peel an orange, get a whiff of a citrus essential oil, or mix up a batch of lemonade. And be sure to breathe deeply.

When you’re around a dog, even the family dog – be alert and protect your privates. Because dog bites to the groin are becoming more and more common. This is according to animal behaviorist Dr. Nicholas Dodman from Tufts University.

He says dogs focus in on where the pheromones are coming from – and that’s the groin region. So, just like a dog will sniff you there – it’s likely to bite you there, too.

And by the way, these aren’t just dog bites from unfamiliar animals. Dr. Dodman says 75% of bites come from dogs people know and trust. That’s why self-defense expert Loren Christensen says to adopt this stance when you’re right in front of a dog: Put your left leg forward, right leg back. That way, there’s not a clear path to your groin.

But you don’t need to drink it – simply sniff a teabag. Yale University researchers found that taking 6 slow, deep whiffs of Earl Grey tea calms our amygdala – which is a region of the brain linked to stress and anxiety.
And when there’s a heat wave, the hot, oppressive weather is known to over-stimulate the amygdala, which is why we get easily irritated and anxious in sweltering weather. So the next time that happens to you, take 6 deep whiffs of Earl Grey, and you’ll be calmer in 2 minutes or less.

When you get stressed out, sniff an orange. The scent of oranges activates the same brain nerves that antidepressants and hormones do. Which can help us feel happier and less anxious in as little as two minutes.

Grab the horseradish! The condiment contains a sinus-clearing chemical that’s a lot like the one in over-the-counter decongestants. And you don’t even have to eat it! Experts say that a few sniffs from a jar will do just as good a job of clearing your sinuses.
