Because a steady beat can help you run longer and more efficiently. And picking up your pace just 10% – from 140 beats per minute to 155 beats per minute – can reduce the stress on your knees! That’s because shorter steps reduce impact. You can use an app like Cruise Control Run, which will change the beat of any song on your smartphone to match your desired pace.

Exercise regularly! Researchers from Saint Louis University found working long hours, and spending more time away from the family hurts our home life. But people who exercised regularly were less stressed at work, even if they were having personal problems. So, they got more done and were more likely to leave on time, which reduced the friction at home. Plus, exercise boosted their mood and confidence, making them better able to forget about work after hours. Making it easier for them to relax, unwind, and enjoy their family.

…may be a busy schedule of work, exercise, friends, hobbies, and volunteering.

University of Texas researchers studied over 300 people over age 50. And those with the busiest schedules and social lives had better memories, sharper reasoning, faster problem-solving, and a greater vocabulary at every age. Because keeping busy regularly exposes us to new situations and people, and helps us learn new things. All of which have been shown to improve brain function, and help stave off age-related memory decline.

Sometimes, it’s hard to get going when you’re doing cardio – like running or Spinning. But just give it 4 minutes. That’s about how long it takes for our cardio-respiratory system to get going – which helps us use oxygen more efficiently. Once that kicks in, you won’t be panting and gasping for air, and exercise will feel easier.

Researchers found we tend to underestimate how much we’ll enjoy a workout. Because we’re focused on the beginning, when we’re thinking, “Man, I don’t want to exercise!” – instead of how good we’ll feel once we’re done. The study also found the happiest people schedule their favorite exercises first. Because looking forward to something fun motivates them to get going.

Get more exercise! Researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand found that the oxygen-rich blood flooding the brain during exercise helps sharpen the mind. And adults who exercised regularly, regardless of age, performed better on difficult cognitive tasks compared with those who exercised less. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s 60 minutes of vigorous exercise, like running sprints, taking a brisk 10-minute walk around the block three or four times a day, or doing light resistance training in your own home.

Social facilitation. That’s the tendency to perform better when you know you’re being watched. And, according to sports psychologists, it’s why, when you run with a friend who’s a little fitter than you, you run faster. Or you try harder in an exercise class when the instructor is walking around the room, watching your moves. So, if you have trouble with motivation when you’re working out, it pays to exercise in a group or with a friend. Just remember: Social facilitation, and at the moment, social distancing too.

Exercise regularly. People who work out live up to 7 years longer than those who don’t. Also, exercise can reduce depression and boost self-esteem. Just 10 minutes of activity three times a day can do the trick. So go for a run, take a walk, use water bottles as weights, or get on that exercise bicycle. Just get moving!

To boost the odds you’ll put on your sneakers and go for a run – or hit the gym, ask yourself: “Will I exercise today?” Doing that significantly boosts your chances of working out, according to the Journal of Consumer Psychology. That’s because asking yourself questions makes you more aware of your choices, and more likely to make healthier decisions. The same thing applies to asking, “Am I going to eat more chips?” Bottom line: People who questioned themselves about exercise and eating were more likely to cut calories and work out.

Too much sitting significantly raises your risk of cancer! According to the researchers at WebMD, people who stay physically active most of their lives are 73% less likely to develop bladder cancer, and 77% less likely to develop kidney cancer. That’s compared to lifelong couch potatoes.

According to the Mayo Clinic, we should all be getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, like a brisk walk, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, like a heart pumping low-impact workout on a stationary bike.

Bottom line: More exercise equals less of a cancer risk.
