People who do, eat more nutritiously overall – and weigh nearly 8 pounds less, on average. They also have waists that are nearly 2 inches smaller than non-avocado eaters. That’s because the healthy fat and fiber in avocado keeps you feeling full.

It may not be the season for avocados in all areas, but avocados are available in most markets, so grab one next time you’re at the store.

Stuck in traffic? Keep your windows rolled up and the A/C on. Because the air inside your car is healthier for your heart! That’s according to Taiwanese researchers. They found when people kept the air on during their commute, measurements of their cardiovascular health were as much as 32% better. That’s compared to people who rolled their windows down instead. The reason? Because the A/C filters out automobile exhaust particles, a type of pollutant that can cause a cascade of internal inflammation. And over time, the inflammation can disrupt your heart’s electrical signals, and raise your risk for a heart attack. Again – want to boost your heart health? Keep your windows closed, and the A/C on when you’re stuck in traffic.

Here are a few tips for when you should schedule your doctor visits and how that timing could affect your test results.

  • First: Schedule your next dental appointment for 3 pm. Research shows that local anesthetic lasts nearly 3 times longer in mid-afternoon, which means less pain. And if dentists stress you out, dab some lavender essential oil on your temples and wrists beforehand. According to the Journal of Research in Pharmacy Practice, the aroma of lavender significantly reduces anxiety AND the perception of pain.
  • Then, schedule a colonoscopy first thing in the morning. It’ll make fasting easier. Plus, early-in-the-day colonoscopies are more likely to catch abnormal growths than those performed later. Researchers say it’s because doctors make fewer errors when they’re fully rested.
  • As far as mammograms go, book your appointment for right after your period, that’s the time of the month when breast tissue is the least dense, which will increase the scan’s accuracy.

Want to take a power nap – but don’t want to risk sleeping too long, and feeling groggy for the rest of the day? Take what experts call a “drop nap.” Sit in a chair and hold an object that, when you doze off and drop it on the floor, will make a loud enough noise to wake you. So something like a heavy book – or an empty plastic tumbler. That way, you’ll know you slept because you dropped it – and you won’t sleep too long.

If a big meal leaves you feeling gassy and bloated, firmly massage the arches of both feet for 2 minutes. Studies show a foot rub after a rich meal reduces gas and belly pain in 74% of people. Dr. David Edelberg is an integrative medicine professor at the University of Chicago……and he says it works by stimulating the body’s enteric nervous system. Those are the nerves that help produce intestinal enzymes, get food moving faster through your digestive tract, and calm belly spasms. So you’ll digest your meal with a lot less gas and bloating after a 2-minute foot massage.

Sometimes it IS okay for the elderly to have high blood pressure! According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, if you have a loved one, age 85 or older, with high blood pressure, don’t worry about it. High blood pressure in people who are very elderly is an indication of better health, while lower numbers could mean trouble. Dr. James Goodwin is a professor of geriatric medicine – and he says high blood pressure in the very old is simply a sign that their heart is pumping strongly and predicts an even longer life! Low blood pressure could mean the heart isn’t pumping efficiently. So, before an elderly loved one goes on blood pressure meds, have a talk with their doctor to see if it’s necessary.

Whether it’s black or green, a daily cup of tea may help you to live longer. The reason? Because it soothes your heart. Research from Johns Hopkins found that people who drink between 1 and 3 cups of tea a day have less calcium buildup in their arteries… which makes them 35% LESS likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those who DON’T drink tea.

If you’re healthy – and your dog is, too – it’s okay to accept doggy kisses. Jan Bellow is president of the American Veterinary Dental College… and she says your dog’s mouth is teeming with bacteria, but her lick’s essentially harmless if you’re both in good health. But keep her from licking any cuts or scrapes. And if her breath could peel paint – avoid her kisses. Because that’s a sign of gum disease, and that bacteria can transfer to you.

Here’s why you should KEEP ordering spicy food, no matter how much it scorches your mouth (within reason of course):
Because spicier food is healthier! That’s according to Dr. Ashwin Mehta, a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He says when we eat hot-and-spicy food, it causes mild inflammation from our tongue all the way down to our digestive tract.
And while chronic inflammation can cause health problems, the temporary inflammation caused by spicy food is just enough to increase saliva AND blood flow. And in turn, this makes the lining in our gut better able to absorb nutrients from food – so, more healthy vitamins and nutrients reach our organs.
