…in the form of acne! That’s according to Yale School of Medicine dermatology professor Dr. Mona Gohara. She says two of the worst offenders are foods that contain refined sugars and processed grains. They’re high glycemic foods, which means they break down quickly in your body, causing an insulin spike and raising blood sugar levels. That leads to hormone fluctuations and low-grade inflammation, which makes your face pump out more oil, clogging your pores, and causing acne. And Dr. Gohara says that’s true for adults AND teenagers. Because processed food-related acne can show up at any age.

One more acne trigger: A Harvard study found that people who drank two or more glasses of fat-free milk daily had a 20% higher risk of acne. The problem is fat-free milk contains more sugar than whole milk… and like with refined carbs, the extra sugar raises insulin levels. So, if your skin is breaking out, consider switching to 2% milk, or dairy-free alternatives that contain fewer than 10 grams of sugar per serving.

You know the drill… you hit the gym hard, then run errands in your sweaty clothes. Well, you may want to rinse off and change instead.

Dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman says even a little sweat raises our skin’s bacterial count – which includes the microbes linked to pimples. And when that excess bacteria gets trapped against the skin with damp clothing, it can trigger backne – or back acne… butt-ne – butt acne… or red bumps caused by inflamed hair follicles all over your body. You can also develop rashes along your body’s crevices caused by the same fungus that leads to athlete’s foot. You don’t need to take a shower immediately to avoid rashes and acne… but make sure you rinse off, and change into clean, dry clothes.

Aspirin-acne-5.4.18-wp

Aspirin can help more than pain – it can help your pimples!
That’s because aspirin contains the same ingredient as a lot of acne medications:  salicylic acid. It breaks down the oil clogging the pore and reduces redness.
So try this: Crush an aspirin and mix with a little water. It should be milky – not a paste. Spread it on your face before bed – because our skin goes through more cellular repair and renewal at night.

You may have heard that putting hand sanitizer on a pimple will get rid of the bacteria and dry it up? NOT TRUE!
Dermatologists at Stony Brook University say putting hand sanitizer on acne will only make things worse. First, your skin will produce even more oil to compensate for the drying effect. And the active ingredients in the gel can irritate the skin on your face. As a result, you can get more pimples and redness as a rebound effect. So, don’t do it. Instead, use a product that’s made to fight pimples on your face that contains benzoyl peroxide.

It’s Winter. Dermatologist Dr. Ellen Marmur says acne gets worse in Winter – and it’s down to the dry weather. She says cold outside air has significantly less moisture than the warm or hot air from Spring and Summer. Combine that with windy conditions, and your skin is stripped of natural fats and oils. Those oils usually act as a barrier, keeping bacteria out – and holding moisture in. So without them, it’s a lot easier for dirt, pollution and bacteria to access our pores. The next thing you know: Hello, zits! Another problem in winter are the hot showers we love. They also strip skin of its natural moisture. Add to all of that a dirty scarf rubbing against your chin – and it’s a recipe for skin flare-ups. So wash your scarf once a week, try to take lukewarm showers, and moisturize your skin more in winter than any other season to avoid breakouts.

What do yogurt, sauerkraut and miso soup have in common? They can clear up your skin! Numerous studies found adding good bacteria to our digestive tract can crowd out the bad bacteria that seeps through our pores and causes breakouts. Probiotics also reduce inflammation, which can make our skin erupt. So try eating a serving a day of yogurt with live-and-active cultures, sauerkraut or miso soup.

There’s a link between acne severity and low levels of zinc – an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial mineral… And when we don’t have enough, the bacteria on our face causes pimples. So, eat more zinc-rich foods, like roasted nuts, beans, whole grains, beef, poultry and oysters. In fact, just two oysters provide your daily value of zinc.

Your acne may have something to do with your vitamin supplements. A new study from UCLA links vitamin B12 to increased breakouts.

It seems that the vitamin changes the way skin bacteria behaves. It promotes skin inflammation, which leads to pimples. So if you’re taking extra B12 and breaking out, you may want to talk to your doctor about cutting back.

The best sleep position for preventing wrinkles is on your back. Not only will you avoid wrinkles caused by pressure and pillow-friction……Your face won’t come in contact with all the dirt and oil on your pillowcase – or the grease from your hair – so you’ll be less likely to break out.

Did you know that some people get breakouts caused by milk?

milk-breakouts

That’s according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. It turns out that skim milk causes the MOST skin flare-ups…Because fat-free milk is concentrated, so it contains more breakout-causing hormones. Dairy farmers also add whey protein to make skim milk taste creamier – which can cause breakouts.
Your best bet: Eat yogurt… Which causes fewer breakouts than any other milk product. Experts believe it’s because of yogurt’s probiotic bacteria.
