What do yogurt, sauerkraut and miso soup have in common? They can clear up your skin! Numerous studies found adding good bacteria to our digestive tract can crowd out the bad bacteria that seeps through our pores and causes breakouts. Probiotics also reduce inflammation, which can make our skin erupt. So try eating a serving a day of yogurt with live-and-active cultures, sauerkraut or miso soup.

If you eat yogurt, don’t pour off the watery stuff on top. It’s super healthy. It’s whey – and it has tons of protein, calcium, vitamin D and probiotics. So if you pour it down the sink, you’ll miss out on all the health benefits. Instead, mix it in!

NYU sleep specialist, Dr. Rebecca Scott says going to bed full is worse. That’s because it can cause acid reflux, which can wake you up, or cause restless sleep. But going to bed with a growling stomach isn’t ideal either. Low blood sugar could also cause you to wake up in the middle of the night. So if you’re hungry before bed, eat a very small snack, like almonds or yogurt. The protein will digest slowly, so your stomach won’t rumble – but it won’t be too heavy or fatty and keep you awake.

Here are two ways:

• In England, the go-to for an upset stomach is peppermint tea. It relieves cramps and constipation by relaxing the muscles from the esophagus on down. Just don’t use it if you have heartburn. Because that relaxing effect can allow acid to splash back up.

• And in Indonesia, they reach for nutmeg. Try sprinkling half a teaspoon on mashed banana, or mixing it in yogurt. Nutmeg is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory – and calms stomachaches, spasms and diarrhea.

Fruit smoothies can cause dental erosion – which can lead to tooth sensitivity and wear away the enamel. In fact, when researchers exposed teeth to an hour’s worth of sipping a smoothie, the enamel weakened by nearly 40%! That’s because smoothies can be highly acidic. So switch to a smoothie with milk or yogurt in it, too. Because the calcium will help minimize the enamel-softening effects of the acid.

Yes and no. The body doesn’t produce MORE mucus when we eat dairy. However, milk, dairy products like yogurt, and creamy sauces can make phlegm THICKER, so you may feel more congested. But it won’t lengthen your cold.

…or just take off the chill when you come in from the cold? Get some cinnamon in your system! Studies show that the spice slightly boosts our body temperature from the inside out, and cranks our calorie burn. So sprinkle a dash on top of yogurt, a latte, apple slices, or bake it into cookies.

Did you know that some people get breakouts caused by milk?

milk-breakouts

That’s according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. It turns out that skim milk causes the MOST skin flare-ups…Because fat-free milk is concentrated, so it contains more breakout-causing hormones. Dairy farmers also add whey protein to make skim milk taste creamier – which can cause breakouts.
Your best bet: Eat yogurt… Which causes fewer breakouts than any other milk product. Experts believe it’s because of yogurt’s probiotic bacteria.

Here’s why: Your body uses more energy to process it than fat and carbohydrates. So, if you want to reap the benefits, try to eat at least 15 grams of protein at each of your meals. For example, you could have an 8-ounce cup of low-fat yogurt at breakfast, a half-cup serving of hummus at lunch, and a 3-ounce salmon fillet for dinner.

Here’s an easy way to make your mornings less hectic.

Have the same thing for breakfast every day. Like blueberries in Greek yogurt. That’s what Dr. Oz has. It’ll be a no-brainer, so you don’t have to think about what to make – all you do is dump the berries on top of the yogurt and grab a spoon. Plus, you’ll be getting a ton of nutrients and protein, to keep you feeling full. Another plus? Women who eat the same thing for breakfast every day consume 100 fewer calories per day than women who change it up all the time.
