Which is worse… Drinking coffee through a straw or from a cup?

Believe it or not, sipping through a straw is worse. A lot of people do it so they won’t stain their teeth. But dermatologist Carolyn Jacob says, the coffee is going to swirl around your teeth anyway. But the straw can cause lip wrinkles. That’s because repetitive movements, like pursing your mouth, break down collagen – which is what keeps skin firm. So drink from the cup instead – wait 30 minutes for your tooth enamel to re-harden, and then brush or chew sugarless gum to prevent stains.

Your smartphone addiction could be to blame! Dermatologist Dr. Mitchel Goldman says constantly lowering your head to look at your phone can cause the skin on your neck to sag – and horizontal lines to form. That’s because the skin on the neck is thinner than on other parts of the body. It also has relatively few oil glands – unlike the face. Put all that together and your neck can become as wrinkly as a turtle. So, to prevent premature neck wrinkles, moisturize it daily, wear sunscreen, and hold your phone at eye level.

Keep your chin up! Staring down at our smartphones and tablets for hours every day can create new wrinkles across our neck and throat. The smooth-neck prescription: Hold your phone higher, think chin-level, not chest or waist-level. And apply a collagen-boosting cream every night to help reduce the appearance of lines and creases.

…and cause everything from pimples to wrinkles! Because stress hormones trigger inflammation and protein loss, which breaks down firming collagen. But there IS an antidote: Positivity! UCLA dermatology professor, Dr. Howard Murad, had female study participants read positive affirmations off note cards every day for a month. The result: The women had lower blood pressure, reduced hormonal stress levels AND better skin hydration – which is a major factor in youthful-looking skin. He calls it the brain-beauty connection. And he says thinking positive, and viewing obstacles as opportunities, will help make your skin younger-looking too.

If you take glucosamine to protect your joints, then have you looked in the mirror lately? Because your skin probably looks pretty amazing, too! A study in the Journal of Dermatologic Treatment showed a 34% reduction in visible wrinkles and fine lines in people who took a glucosamine supplement. And The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology says glucosamine can also help wounds heal faster, improve skin hydration, and decrease wrinkles when taken as a supplement. So what gives it these potent skin powers? Well, glucosamine is a building block for hyaluronic acid, which hydrates the skin and plumps it up. You’ve probably seen skin serums with that ingredient. Well, these studies show that ingesting glucosamine can have the same effect, if not better! It’s good for our joints, because it lubricates them, helps them retain water, and promotes collagen, and it can have the same effect on our face. The experts say talk to your doctor about taking a supplement. The recommended dose is 1500 milligrams a day – and you’ll see a 34% reduction in lines and wrinkles within 5 weeks.

Do our noses keep growing?

You may have heard that noses never stop growing. So even the tiniest button nose may become a schnoz by the time a person is old and wrinkly. Well, our nose doesn’t actually keep growing. Instead, gravity takes its toll, dragging the tip of the nose down. Plus, the same thing that causes wrinkles – our skin’s collagen and elastin breaking down – affects the nose as well. The end result: Our nose starts to droop, making it look bigger as we age.

Are you getting a ‘computer face’?

Did you know that staring down at your computer all day could give you “computer face?” That’s a new term cosmetic surgeons use to describe the sagging jowls and eye wrinkles common in people who spend their days hunched over computers. The sagging jowls are caused by constantly looking down, which shortens the neck muscles and makes the neck baggy. And the wrinkles are caused by squinting and frowning while concentrating on the screen. And doing it for long enough, or frequently enough, will make those wrinkles and lines permanent. To save your face: Set your computer at eye level, and hold your smartphone at eye level, too. And if you find yourself squinting at the screen, go into settings and increase the size of the typeface. By simply increasing the size of the font, we may be able to hold off on the Botox a little bit longer.

Botox has another new use: Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding. About 13% of the population grinds their teeth in their sleep, and Botox is now being used to help. A strategically placed shot of Botox can prevent the muscles in your jaw from contracting as hard, without freezing them completely. And the effects last up to 6 months. The Bruxism Association says the research is convincing, and Botox is just as effective as other treatments, like mouth guards.

…try some blueberries, first. Research at the University of Hawaii found the antioxidants in blueberries slow the formation of fine lines and wrinkles… because they boost production of collagen and elastin, the inner structure that keeps our skin smooth and supple. Those same compounds also help heal damaged skin – making it look younger and healthier, again.

You’ve heard us say not to sleep face down because it causes wrinkles… well, it’ll also tweak your spine. Chiropractor Dr. Jan Lefkovitz says, quote, “It’s the worst thing!” Because if you’re sleeping on your stomach, you’re probably turning your head to one side. And having your neck awkwardly rotated for hours can cause severe back and neck pain, and cause misalignment. Dr. Lefkowitz says if you’re a stomach sleeper, one of the easiest ways to break that habit is to sleep with a full-length body pillow to block yourself from rolling onto your stomach.
