Next time you see someone hacking up a lung, do a double-take. Why? Just looking at a sick person may boost your immune system.

Canadian scientists asked 28 study participants to view photos of people coughing and sneezing… and then they tested their blood. The result? Their white blood cells contained 24% more cytokines – the proteins that improve immune response. They believe it’s an automatic defense to help you keep from catching whatever the sick person’s got.

If you’ve been out in the sun without sunscreen for an hour and forty minutes – you’ve suppressed your immune system by 50%. And when the body’s defenses are lowered, that’s what raises the risk of skin cancer… and can make people vulnerable to infections. That’s because too much UV radiation decreases the amount of T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that help keep our immune system strong. That’s according to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. Share that with someone you know who spends a lot of time outside.

wiggle your toes or drum your fingers for a minute. Stanford University scientists say the fine motor control involved in drumming or wiggling fingers and toes tells the brain to dial down the production of stress hormones. And those movements not only reduce anxiety by stimulating our nerves, they also increase activity among our disease-fighting white blood cells.

Sniff some citrus, like a lemon wedge. The Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation says it can calm a queasy stomach in a minute… Because the scent goes right to the brain’s nausea center and calms it down. You can also sip some hot water with lemon. Lemon juice contains a compound which triggers white blood cells to attack invading germs. So, if there’s bad bacteria in your gut, your white blood cells will tamp it down.
