You can lose over 5 pounds in 12 weeks without changing what you eat, or how much you exercise. How? Drink a glass of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner. According to a study in the journal Obesity, it works simply by filling you up, so you eat less. And drinking TWO glasses of water before each meal helped people lose TWICE as much weight. It’s as simple as that.

If you want abs of steel, skip the crunches and planks, and do cardio! Yes, planks strengthen your core, but you won’t SEE that core without aerobic exercise. In fact, exercise scientists from Auburn University found people doing abs exercises for 6 weeks lost NO abdominal fat, because we can’t spot-reduce fat. But consistent aerobic exercise, like running or swimming, plus strength training and cutting calories DOES lead to weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.

It may be because you live on a busy, noisy street! According to the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine, regular exposure to traffic noise makes us nearly 30% more likely to be overweight. And the risk is even higher if you’re not just hearing cars – but also planes overhead, trains, or road construction.
Because the noise raises our stress levels. And you know that the more cortisol that’s coursing through us, the more we tend to eat, and the more calories we store as fat.
So what can you do if you live in busy, noisy area? The researchers recommend drowning it out with soothing background music – or a white noise machine… or wearing noise-canceling headphones when you’re eating or need to focus.

When it comes to your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight, settle on a goal – and DON’T have a backup plan. According to management professor Katy Milkman from Wharton, having a backup plan kills motivation. In studies, when people were asked to come up with a goal AND a Plan B, they were less likely to achieve their main goal. Professor Milkman says that’s because having a backup plan makes failure an option.

If you want to lose weight – don’t think about what you can’t eat. Instead, focus on the positive. So it’s not “I can’t eat fries…” It’s “I CAN eat more fruit.” That comes from nutritionist Joy Bauer. And it makes your eating plan about positive action rather than deprivation. And professor Art Markman agrees. He teaches psychology and marketing at the University of Texas. He says, when you add something – like more vegetables – instead of taking something away – you’re more likely to repeat the action until it becomes an automatic habit.

If so, you’re a lean, mean, fat burning machine. Researchers from Denmark found runners who logged about 3 miles a week lost an average of 4 pounds in a year – while keeping their diet exactly the same. BUT, runners who also cut back the usual suspects – soda, snacks and junk food – lost 12 pounds on average. And notice I said “cut back” – they didn’t have to drop those fun foods entirely. So lace up your running shoes, do 3.1 miles a week, and you’re guaranteed to lose weight.

A lot of people don’t want to give up smoking because they’re afraid they’ll gain weight. If that’s your excuse, you’ll have to find a new one – because researchers at Brigham Young University just blew that theory up in smoke, so to speak. They found that cigarette smoke actually causes metabolic changes that lead to WEIGHT GAIN. Even worse: The effect is stronger with SECONDHAND smoke. So a husband who smokes may gain a few pounds – but his poor wife breathing in all those fumes will gain even more. So if you’re looking to lose weight – ditch the cigarettes.
