…forget the scale or how your jeans are fitting, just measure your neck! Because your stomach can get bigger or smaller depending on when you last ate or hit the bathroom, and how much sodium you’ve ingested. Your neck circumference isn’t affected by those things, so it’s a more accurate indicator of everything from heart disease to diabetes. So what’s a healthy neck size? For guys, anything under 16-and-a-half inches. A woman’s neck should be less than 14 point 2 inches around. If it’s larger, talk to your doctor, because it’s now seen as a health risk factor.

We’ve heard that eating at night leads to weight gain… even if you’re not eating any more than you normally do. So why is that? According to the Autonomous University of Chile, it’s because our bodies have adapted to burn more energy during the day. So as the sun sets, our metabolism naturally slows down, helping us prepare for sleep. That means we’re not processing food as efficiently. And in a study of 5,000 people, those who ate after 8pm had waists that were two inches bigger – even though they ate the same number of calories, and had the same activity levels as those who ate earlier in the day.

If you want to weigh yourself when you’re at your lightest – step on the scale Friday morning, right when you wake up. We’re always at our lightest weight of the day when we wake up because we’ve been fasting overnight. Plus, we typically weigh the most on Mondays – after a weekend of indulging – and as the week progresses, we weigh less, since our weekday eating is more regimented.

Go ahead and weigh yourself with your clothes ON!

If you step on the scale with your clothes on – you can subtract 2 or 3 pounds. University of North Dakota researchers studied this – and men’s clothing averages 3 pounds total – women’s clothing averages 2.

Lose weight faster.

walk-5pm

Take a walk at 5:00 o’clock! Studies show that working out later in the day boosts weight loss. That’s because body temperature peaks in the late afternoon or early evening…Which means, that’s when your muscles are at their warmest, so exercise will feel easier and you’ll push yourself harder and go faster. And that extra energy will increase your calorie burn.

Walking is good for you!

Here’s why: It can actually alter your genetics, and lower the activity in the ones that influence body weight. Harvard researchers studied 12,000 people – and measured how many fat genes each person had and how much they exercised. The ones who walked briskly for an hour a day cut the effect of their weight-promoting genes in half! But the opposite is also true. Hours spent sitting can make those fat genes more active! So we DO have some control over our genetics. The trick is to make it work in your favor by walking an hour a day.

Here’s a simple equation to help you get on track.

 calories-11x

Multiply your weight times 11! That’s the number of daily calories you should be able to eat and still lose a pound a week. So let’s say you’re 200 pounds – times that by 11, that’s 2,200 calories. But remember, as you lose weight, you’ll need to keep re-calculating.

Have you ever wondered what your clothes weigh?

If you weigh yourself with clothing on: Ladies, subtract 2 pounds – guys, subtract 3. According to the International Journal of Obesity, that’ll give you a more accurate gauge of what you weigh.
