Here’s great advice for de-stressing after work, from Harvard business school professor, Dr. Teresa Amabile. She says, think about how you set up your day. For example, you say ‘hi’ to the security guard, grab a coffee, and check your email. So, create another ritual at the end of the day to decompress. For example, maybe you listen to your favorite music on the way home, take the dog for a quick walk, and have a relaxing mug of tea. The more you engage in a set pattern of rituals, the quicker you’ll relax and detach.

If you hate the very idea of exercise, it’s time to change your definition of it! Behavioral scientist Dr. Michelle Segar says if you think it only counts if you run 3 miles and sweat like crazy, you’re less likely to exercise, while people doing activities they find fun are more active. Think, hiking with your dog, or playing tennis with friends. Because time flies when the goal isn’t to push yourself as hard and as long as possible.

Bottom line: If you hate exercise, Dr. Segar suggests looking for ways to make it something you look forward to. And you’ll be much more likely to make exercise a regular part of your life.

Well, the lingering stress hormones, like cortisol, could make you cranky, and hurt your health in the long run. So, work-life balance expert Mary LoVerde recommends a “power hour” ritual to help you switch from work mode to home mode. So maybe you walk the dog and take a soothing shower. Or you change into sweats and start dinner if you find that relaxing. Just make your “power hour” a repetitive ritual, because planning something new every day will just ADD stress. LoVerde says rituals make it easier to wind down and relax. They also make you more mindful, so you’ll spend your time at home “in the moment,” instead of stressing about work.

How would you like to improve your health AND save $2,500 a year? Well, you don’t have to scrimp and save. All you have to do is take your dog for a walk every day. Or walk your kid to school. Or even walk around the mall for half an hour. Because a 30-minute walk, at least 5 days a week, is all it takes to reduce your annual medical expenses by $2,500. You’ll cut down on sick days, doctor visits, insurance claims and medicines. So take a daily walk and save yourself a bunch of money!

For your blood pressure: Get 20 minutes of daylight a day. That doesn’t mean baking in the sun… you can get enough UVA rays walking the dog – or sitting by a window to drink your morning coffee. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, people getting 20 minutes of daylight saw their blood pressure drop 2 points without changing anything else. The reason? UVA light helps nitric oxide circulate in your blood. And that regulates blood pressure and lowers your risk of stroke.

Simple. Don’t call it a workout! Collin Payne is a behavioral expert from Cornell University. And he says, when people think, “Oh man, what a workout!” Or “I exercised today” – they believe they did something hard and deserve a reward… which is generally a food reward. People also consider exercise something unpleasant – so getting motivated to do it is harder. But if we simply change our language, we defeat the excuses and the food binges. So tell yourself, “I can’t wait to go for a hike with my best friend.” Or “I’m just out walking the dog.” When we re-frame it positively, we’re less likely to avoid the activity – and less likely to think we deserve a reward for doing it.
