Pop vitamin D instead. According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, low levels of “D” are linked to daytime sleepiness. Here’s why: Vitamin D helps keep bones and muscles healthy – so too little can cause weak muscles, and sore joints that could keep you up at night. Also, low vitamin D levels are linked to inflammation – which directly causes sleepiness. So start popping up to a‑thousand International Units of vitamin D daily. Especially if you suffer from milk allergies, or are a vegetarian or vegan, and are getting less “D” than average.

Here’s a quick do-it-yourself way to tell if YOU might need more Vitamin D… It’s from nutritionist Karen Langston, from the National Association of Nutrition Professionals: Press your fingers against your sternum – AKA your breastbone… or press on your shinbone. If it’s painful, you might be low on “D”. Why would it hurt? Because we need D for strong bones!
So if you try the sternum test and it hurts, talk to your doctor about taking a supplement.

Unless you have a problem with dairy, don’t swap your cow’s milk for almond milk. That’s the advice of registered dietician Jaclyn London. She says they both have the same number of calories, calcium and vitamin D… but almond milk can have extras you don’t need or want. Like artificial ingredients to make it taste creamier… and added sugar, to sweeten it. So stick with regular ol’ milk, unless you have lactose intolerance. And in that case, look for unsweetened almond milk…… or go for unsweetened soy milk, which has as much protein as skim dairy milk.

An estimated three-quarters of North American adults DON’T get enough Vitamin D in their diet. But if the increased risk of bone loss, weaker muscles, and potential cancer isn’t enough to scare you into adding more D, consider what this means for something much more noticeable – like your hair!

Experts tell us that Vitamin D absolutely can stimulate hair growth. Recent studies have shown that D helps increase nutrient metabolism in our follicles, so they pump out more healthy hair… And as a bonus, dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe says D also triggers follicles to produce more oil – which may sound like a perfect recipe for acne – but actually keeps our hair hydrated.
Bottom line: For healthier, younger-looking hair, stock up on more D-rich dairy products, or consider taking a vitamin D supplement.

If you eat yogurt, don’t pour off the watery stuff on top. It’s super healthy. It’s whey – and it has tons of protein, calcium, vitamin D and probiotics. So if you pour it down the sink, you’ll miss out on all the health benefits. Instead, mix it in!

According to The National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in 8 women either has – or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. But the men aren’t safe, either. 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, too. So, we’re going to help lower your odds of developing the disease. Here’s what you should be doing:

First and foremost: Exercise. Research shows that it’s the number-one thing you can do to lower your risk. A study from the National Cancer Institute found that women who average 3 hours of exercise per week, over their lifetime, have a 23% lower risk of developing breast cancer. So, why is it a magic formula? Because exercise lowers estrogen levels – and estrogen is a well-known factor in cancerous changes in the breast.

Tip #2: Watch what you drink. Alcohol is a double-edged sword… While it’s been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, it increases your risk of breast cancer. One study found that each daily glass of alcohol raises a woman’s risk by up to 12%.

And lastly: Get more vitamin D.

One study found that women who got the most calcium and Vitamin D had a35% lower risk than those who got the least. Unfortunately, nearly 75% of us have inadequate levels. Many experts now believe that taking 1,000 IUs of Vitamin D daily is best.

winter-cold-vitaminD

We may be more vulnerable to colds in the winter because there’s less sunlight, and we’re absorbing less vitamin D. People with decreased levels of D have weaker immune systems. That’s because D kick-starts our body’s immune response. But it’s not like you can pop some D when you feel a cold coming on, to beat it. You need to increase your levels before you’re sick. So either take 2,000 International Units in a supplement daily – of course talk to your doctor first – or get 10 minutes of daylight exposure every day.

A little bit of sun is good for us.

sun Just 10 minutes of sunshine is all you need every day to boost your vitamin D – even on cloudy days. And a vitamin D deficiency can increase your risk of stroke by 80%, not to mention the possible risk of heart disease. So go outside and enjoy the sunlight for a few minutes this weekend.
