If you have aches and pains, you may want to start making your salads and sandwiches with butter lettuce. Also called Boston or Bibb lettuce. It contains a trio of compounds found nowhere else: Vitamins C, K and a nutrient called lactucarium. And scientists at Boston University say, when you combine those 3 compounds, it reduces inflammation and stiffness, relaxes tight muscles and heals damaged tissues in 63% of people. It can even help you sleep better at night. So if you have aches and pains, try adding butter lettuce to your salads and sandwiches. You’ll get a good dose of nutrients, and help ease your pain.

If you’re on painkillers – especially for chronic pain – this is important: Regularly taking over-the-counter pain meds, like aspirin or ibuprofen, can drain your tissues of vitamin C. And that can lead to MORE pain – like achy joints, inflamed gums and frequent bruising. So eat a cup of produce with a high vitamin C content every day if you’re taking pain medication – like citrus, strawberries, kiwi or red peppers. It can prevent achy joints and other pain issues entirely.

A red pepper and papaya salad. People who eat foods high in vitamin C are better at handling stressful situations, like a test and public speaking. Vitamin C is known to lower blood pressure and the stress hormone cortisol. And a cup of papaya has twice as much vitamin C as an orange, and red pepper has even more.

Skip the energy drinks, and drink some OJ, instead. Researchers in Korea gave tired office workers IVs filled with plain saline solution, or saline solution spiked with high doses of vitamin C. The result: The “C” receivers were less tired than those who got the placebo. The reason? Because “C” reduces oxidative stress, which contributes to fatigue.

Next time you eat an apple, save the peel and rub the inside on your cleanly-scrubbed face. Skincare expert Cecilia Wong says the dose of vitamins C, A and E will soften your skin and help minimize lines. Plus, the peel has malic acid, which has an exfoliating effect similar to enzyme facial peels… But it’s gentle enough to do every day. Just rub the inside of the apple peel on your face, wait 5 minutes, then rinse.

And eating at least one piece of citrus fruit daily will lift your mood within days.

Sprinkle some nutmeg in your coffee, hot chocolate, oatmeal or eggnog. It’s the perfect antidote to holiday stress! That’s because nutmeg is loaded with anxiety relievers like calcium and vitamin C. Plus it contains a compound called myristicin – which mimics the effects of antidepressants.

exercise-asthma

If you have exercise-induced asthma – where you cough, wheeze or have shortness of breath only while exercising – pop a vitamin C beforehand next time. 20% of people who DON’T have regular asthma have trouble breathing during exercise – especially in cold or dry air. If that’s you, taking a-thousand milligrams of vitamin C an hour before spin class will help keep your airways open. That’s because vitamin C relaxes blood vessels and lowers stress hormones – both of which can help airways stay open.

Who needs a teeth-whitening kit when we have strawberries? The salicylic acid in strawberries lifts surface stains from tooth enamel, while their vitamin C whitens teeth by removing plaque.
