You might want to cut the length and intensity of your workout. Because researchers found the stress of prolonged vigorous exercise can impair gut function. It’s called exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome. And people who spent at least 2 continuous hours at 60% of their maximum intensity, slowed digestion and nutrient absorption, and even triggered endotoxemia, which can cause shock, hemorrhaging, and kidney damage.

So, if you get indigestion after strenuous exercise, you might want to dial back the length and intensity of your workout.

The high-sugar foods we tend to eat all summer – like ice cream, popsicles, and Frappuccinos – can make us feel gassy and bloated. That’s because sugar feeds our intestinal bacteria and makes it multiply. The solution: Sip a glass of mint iced tea! Peppermint contains menthol, which stalls the growth of gas-producing bacteria. Mint also relaxes stomach muscles; it has an antispasmodic effect – which means it can relieve gas and cramping. In fact, UCLA scientists found that sipping a glass of mint tea after meals helped reduce stomach trouble for up to 69% of people tested.

Grab some oregano! It contains the digestion-boosting plant compound ursolic acid – which speeds food from the stomach to the intestines faster… And helps reduce gas production.

Your best bet: Sprinkle a tablespoon of fresh oregano on grilled vegetables or potatoes. Or add a teaspoon of dried oregano to olive oil and parmesan cheese to make a pesto sauce for pasta.

You may not need a pill or tablet to relieve your indigestion. A teaspoon of straight olive oil could do the trick. Research from Bastyr University in Washington has found it can soothe an upset stomach in 15 minutes. That’s because olive oil contains anti-inflammatory compounds that aid digestion enzymes and bile. In fact, consuming 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day – like in salad dressing or on roasted vegetables – can help alleviate chronic gastrointestinal pain in 3 weeks.

If you have stomach cramps or diarrhea, eat a cup of fresh or frozen raspberries. The Journal of Applied Microbiology says raspberries have antimicrobial compounds. That’ll slow the growth of the salmonella or staph bacteria in your intestines causing your discomfort.

Chew some sugarless gum to help with digestion. It increases your production of saliva – neutralizing the stomach acid flare-ups that can trigger indigestion.
