80% of people surveyed say they frequently experience daily stress for one thing or another. If that’s you, here’s a way to beat it: Shop from home. Seriously! Research from the University of Miami shows that 8 in 10 people who flip through catalogs or browse online retailers feel less stressed… and they get that effect whether they buy something or not! It releases a flood of feel-good brain chemicals.

Try a finger massage! University of Miami researchers found taking 5 minutes to firmly massage the tips of your fingers can boost energy, alertness, and concentration for up to two hours! That’s because it stimulates acupressure points linked to the frontal lobes of the brain. And that produces energizing beta waves that enhance focus! So during your next 3pm energy slump, try a 5-minute finger massage. That’ll power you through the rest of the workday.

…give yourself a 5-minute foot massage. Researchers at the University of Miami say massaging your toes and the soles of your feet prompt the body to release pain-killing endorphins. That’ll help you drift off 33% faster – and add 42 minutes of sleep, on average. Their study was done on people with back pain – and 63% said their pain was diminished after a foot massage.

80% of people surveyed experience daily stress. If that’s you, here’s how to fight it:

First: Shop from home! University of Miami researchers found 8‑in‑10 people who browse catalogs or online stores feel less stressed, whether they buy something or not! Because it releases feel-good brain chemicals.

Another stress-reducer: Play solitaire, use a backgammon app, or do a Sudoku puzzle. Games distract and reset the mind, and are proven to reduce stress as much as exercise!

Finally, have a snack. If you haven’t eaten in a while, a dip in blood sugar can trigger anxiety. But Harvard researchers found a small snack can reduce stress and anxiety by 75%.

Or if you have a porch swing, rocking chair or hammock, that’ll do the trick, too. Then spend 2 minutes swinging, rocking or swaying. The repetitive motion puts the nervous system into a more relaxed state and calms the amygdala… the brain region linked to stress and anxiety. And swinging is so powerful, the University of Miami says it can reduce the output of stress hormones by 25% for 2 hours. Just from 2 minutes of swinging, rocking or swaying.

Massage your calves before bed. You’ll drift off almost twice as fast. University of Miami researchers say it works by stimulating the nerves in your legs that soothe the adrenal glands, and those are the glands that pump out stress hormones that can keep you awake.
