Excellent. Because just one glass of tea, hot or iced, can improve your heart health. That’s according to the journal Clinical Nutrition. Researchers found that when people drank just one glass of tea, their blood flow was 6.5 times higher than before they drank the tea. And better blood flow is key to reducing conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It’s down to the flavonoid compounds in tea, which widen blood vessels, improving circulation and lowering blood pressure.

…skip the white rice!

The Harvard School of Public Health found that the daily consumption of white rice makes people 1.5 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. That’s why registered dietician Jill Weisenberger recommends brown rice. It contains fiber, so it digests more slowly. Plus, it has magnesium, which helps your body use insulin more efficiently.

Drinking just one can of sugary soda a day increases the risk of Alzheimer’s by 47%. And adding just 2-and-a-half teaspoons of sugar to your daily cup of tea can raise the risk of Alzheimer’s by 33%. That’s according to new research from Columbia University.

First of all, sugar triggers inflammation in the body and brain… and when that happens on a daily basis, the brain has a harder time clearing away plaque. That leads to more inflammation – and eventually, damaged neurons and the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Also, there’s a link between Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Because too much sugar can trigger diabetes, which is also a risk factor for dementia. And the Alzheimer’s Association says this new study backs up that evidence, showing excess sugar may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease… and all types of sugar – from fruit juice to soda – have the same effect. So, to protect your brain and lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cut WAY back on added sugar.

Breakfast really IS the most important meal of the day. In fact, new research from Harvard University found skipping breakfast raises your risk of heart disease and heart attack by as much as 27%. That’s because skipping breakfast makes you hungrier, making you more likely to grab snacks and overeat at lunch. And doing that can lead to weight gain, hypertension, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes, all of which are risk factors for heart disease.

According to Yale University research, playing board games like Scrabble or Monopoly burns calories (but don’t eat any snacks while playing)… 20% more calories than watching TV. So playing just two one-hour games a week can help you lose weight – and reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. In fact, the Yale research says it can cut the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 15%!

One of the best things to do for your body, especially if you have Type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes, is to take a walk after eating. When you do that, it gives your blood sugar a purpose. Because when your muscles are in motion they soak up glucose more efficiently. And that helps regulate and even out blood sugar. So try a 30-minute walk after meals – or at least your biggest meal of the day.

We know that over-use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistant bacteria… But there’s another concern: Type 2 diabetes! Scientists in Denmark found that antibiotics alter the balance of our microbiome. Those are the millions of micro-organisms living in our gut. And when the balance is off, it can cause changes in insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance – which can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. So don’t take antibiotics unless you have a bacterial infection that requires them.
