How many trees are on the street where you live?

10 or more? Good news: Those trees bring a health boost that’s similar to being years younger. A study in the journal Environmental Health found that people who lived in wooded areas, near parks, or on tree-lined streets, had lower blood pressure, and more activity in the parasympathetic nervous system – which calms us down by lowering our heart rate. But even if you live in a concrete jungle, you can still get the green, leafy benefits by spending just 3 days and 2 nights in a wooded area – like on a camping trip.

University of Washington researchers found a window view is far more soothing, and lowers a person’s heart rate farther, than watching TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds, instead of flowers, trees or water, it’s not going to lower your stress.

Look out a window. Researchers at the University of Washington found the view outside is far more soothing – and lowers a person’s heart rate further than plopping in front of the TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds of pedestrians, instead of flowers, trees or a burbling fountain, it’s not going to lower your stress.

Researchers from the University of Chicago looked at data on the amount of trees in one city – along with detailed information on the health of more than 30,000 city residents. And people in neighborhoods with more trees reported significantly fewer symptoms of metabolic syndrome – like high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity or diabetes. It’s down to the healing and restorative effect of nature.

We know that being out in nature is a major stress reliever. Studies show that breathing in the scent of fresh greenery lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol by 12%. And that allows us to think more clearly. But what if you have allergies – and inhaling the scent of trees and grass makes you a wheezing, watery-eyed mess? Get fragrant houseplants – like a eucalyptus or wax plant. Research from the University of Michigan found that inhaling those scents improves attention span and focus – and even raises people’s scores on language and memory tests. An added bonus? Those plants also purify indoor air from allergens.

For an energy-boost…

sit under a tree. The University of Michigan found that smelling the organic aroma of growing trees – and listening to soothing nature sounds, like the rustling of leaves – stimulates your brain’s frontal lobe…And increases production of energy-boosting beta waves…Which can literally double your energy in as little as 10 minutes.
