That’s from a 14-year study on over 6,000 adults. Each participant was asked about their emotional state, the quality of their relationships, and to rate statements like: “Some people wander aimlessly through life, but not me.” The result: Every person who died during the study scored the lowest in purposefulness. Psychologist Dr. Patrick Hill says setting long-term goals can help you live longer, no matter how old you are when you discover what gives your life meaning. So, find a goal, whether it’s learning a new sport, volunteering, or traveling – and get cracking!

You may avoid the water and ice when traveling to exotic locales so you won’t ingest a parasite or illness-causing bacteria. But here’s another thing to steer clear of if you don’t want to spend your vacation worshipping the porcelain God: Raw vegetables! Even in the U.S. and Canada, raw vegetables can be a top source of pathogens because they may be handled by dirty hands, or contain contaminants from soil and water run-off. In fact, the CDC says raw vegetables – like leafy greens – were one of the main sources of food poisoning last year. So if the WATER is sketchy where you’re vacationing, that same sketchy water is being used to grow and wash the vegetables. So order them fully-cooked, so the heat will kill the bacteria.

Arrive at the airport wearing loose, non-binding clothing – instead of tight-fitting. It’s not just about being comfortable on a long flight. It could save your life. According to travel expert Christopher Elliot, wearing form-fitting clothing can reduce circulation in your legs – which raises your risk for developing deep vein thrombosis – dangerous blood clots that can break free and lodge in your lungs or brain, and cause a stroke, or even instant death. So wear your sweats. You may not look fashionable – but you’ll live longer.

If you’re traveling and don’t have any hand-sanitizer – an antiseptic mouthwash can sub for it in a pinch. So if you have one of those mini-travel-size bottles, just put a few drops on your hands and rub them together. The alcohol in the mouthwash will kill bacteria just like hand sanitizer.

Eat some pasta, potatoes or rice two hours before you plan to go to bed at your destination. According to research from Yamaguchi University in Japan, those simple carbs are high on the glycemic index – which means our body breaks them down really quickly. That releases the neurotransmitter tryptophan into our system, which promotes sleep.

Here are some quick tips for conquering jet lag, according to Forbes magazine:

First, you won’t typically get jet lag unless you cross two time zones. If you have a trip coming up that does, before leaving, start operating on the time zone to which you’re traveling. Get up and go to sleep at the correct hour for your destination – and plan your meals according to that schedule too.

If you can choose your seat on the flight, try for a window seat. That way, you can adjust the window shade depending on the direction you’re traveling. Get more light if you’re arriving during the day – close the shade to reduce light exposure if you’ll be arriving at night.

Also in a window seat you’ll have an easier time sleeping. It’s easier to prop up a pillow next to the window – and you won’t have to get up every time your seatmates need the restroom.

Lastly, skip the in-flight movie. Watching a movie stimulates you more than it relaxes you. And can keep you from getting much-needed rest.

Don’t touch those magazines on your next flight!

When you’re on a plane, beware of the in-flight magazines in the seatback pocket! An Auburn University study found that bacteria can survive in seatback pockets for up to a week. And the magazines found there? Thousands of people touch them, they’re never cleaned – and only changed out once every three months when they’re replaced.

So bring your own reading material!

Here’s an easy way to improve your life:

Drink more water. Nutritionist Dr. Grace Webb says 75% of us are chronically dehydrated. And it doesn’t take much to get to that point – losing just 1.5% of the water in our body will do it! Here are a few other reasons to drink more water:

•It’ll tame your sweet tooth. Cardiologist Dr. John Higgins says that your liver needs water to transform stored energy into the sugars that fuel your cells. And being just a few ounces short disrupts that process, and makes us crave sugar from other sources – like candy and donuts.

•Drinking more water also reduces aches and pains. According to the Mayo Clinic, our bodies need a minimum of 8 cups a day to operate efficiently. Less than that, and our electrolyte levels get out of whack and our blood gets thicker, and flows more slowly, making our heart work harder. Which leads to headaches, constipation, and muscle pain.

•Finally: More water equals safer road trips. A study in the journal Physiology and Behavior shows that being dehydrated will literally double your risk of an accident while driving. That’s because it throws off the balance of important brain neurotransmitters and gives us the reaction time of a drunk driver.

Where should you sit on a plane?

The safest seats are in an exit row. If those are booked, try to sit no further than five rows away. That’s because the closer you are to the exit, the more likely you’ll be able to escape in an emergency, like a fire. That’s according to “The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life” by Ben Sherwood.

Also, the healthiest seat is an aisle seat. Passengers who sit there are most likely to move and walk around – which is essential for avoiding blood clots.
