You know those packets they put in boxes with electronics that say “Do not eat?” Do they contain poison? No. The packets are filled with silica gel, a naturally-occurring mineral that absorbs and holds water vapor, so moisture won’t ruin your new TV before you get it home. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, silica gel may not TASTE good, but it’s non-toxic, which means it’s NOT poisonous. So, why does the packet say “Do not eat?” Because 1) It’s not food, and 2) The packet itself could be a choking hazard for small children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says many teens try enhancing their looks with risky supplements. As you can probably guess, boys, go for steroids, protein supplements, and creatine, which boosts energy. Girls are more likely to pop over-the-counter diet pills. But these supplements aren’t regulated – and can be contaminated with toxic ingredients, like lead and mercury, and stimulants like amphetamines. So make sure your teen stays away from those supplements. If they want more muscles – or to lose weight – let them know they’re great, just as they are. And encourage them to make changes safely… with healthy food and an appropriate amount of exercise.

The next time you make a salad, save the cucumber peel. It’s a good way to keep ants away without toxic chemicals. Just place cucumber peels where you have ants, like along a doorway. The rind has alkaloids, which give it a bitter taste, and a scent ants can’t stand… So they’ll find somewhere else to march to.

We’ve talked before about how toxic xylitol is to pets (cats and dogs)… that’s the artificial sweetener found in a lot of sugar-free foods. But your dog is most likely to encounter xylitol in sugar-free gum that’s been spit out on the street or sidewalk. And if your dog gets it on their paws, and tries to lick it off, they could get really sick. So always check your dog’s paws after a walk… and if there’s gum stuck to their pads, get some vegetable oil and rub it all around. It’ll practically disintegrate the gum within seconds – so you can safely wipe it away.

Don’t let your pets near the water under your Christmas tree!
The tree’s sap can turn water toxic. Plus, the preservatives some people add to the water can make pets sick.
If your pet keeps getting under the tree, snapping a tree skirt tightly around the trunk can keep them from accessing the water underneath.

Sleep with an eye mask on. That’s according to Dr. Meir Kryger from the Yale School of Medicine. He’s the author of “The iGuide To Sleep” and he says the darkness provided by a sleep mask tricks your brain into pumping out more of the sleep hormone melatonin. And that not only improves the quality of sleep – melatonin is also toxic to cancer cells. That’s why two studies from Japan found that sleeping without any light exposure can cut your risk of breast cancer by 31%.

Duct tape is 25% more effective! According to the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, covering a wart with duct tape creates an air-tight environment… and something in the adhesive is toxic to warts. Simply cover with duct tape, and replace once a week until the wart disappears.

After all, it’s got “alcohol” in the name. So, are the effects similar to drinking beer, wine or hard liquor? According to Dr. Ryan Welter, from Tristan Medical Center in Massachusetts, the short answer is “Yes, but don’t.” He says most of the alcohol consumed in bars contains yeast-based ethanol – which is what makes us drunk. But products like rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizer contain isopropyl – which is extremely toxic. In fact, Dr. Welter says drinking it may make you feel drunk at first…But the most common side effects include permanent blindness, brain damage, and kidney and liver damage. Not to mention the fact that you can DIE from drinking rubbing alcohol. Bottom line: Just because it has the word “alcohol” in the name, doesn’t mean its safe for consumption.

They taste like candy – but of course, they aren’t. And if you pop too many, you can get vitamin toxicity. Most nutrients have an “upper tolerable intake level” – or UL. And if you go above that, you could experience nausea, vomiting, and kidney problems. For gummy multi-vitamins, typically eating more than 8 will trigger that reaction. So only eat the recommended amount, and buy a bag of real gummy bears to get your candy fix.

A lot of people say that one of the joys of buying a new car is inhaling the “new car smell.” But “new car smell” is actually a fog of 275 toxic chemicals evaporating from the plastic and glue in your automobile’s interior…… Including chromium, lead and brominated flame-retardants……Chemicals that have been linked to birth defects, impaired learning, liver problems and cancer. Bottom line: When you get a new car, you’d be better off driving with the windows open for the first few days to air it out, and get rid of the toxins.
