Roses, lavender, birch trees, sweet basil, tomatoes, and coriander? They contain a compound called linalool, which produces a scent that lowers stress hormones. It’s found in over 200 species of plants and produce. And scents can calm us down because they bypass the rational, thinking part of our brain and go straight to the emotional center.

We always hear talk about how GREEN juices are the healthiest. But when it comes to getting fit, here’s why sipping certain RED juices may be better:

First: Drinks containing BEET juice can give you more endurance. That’s according to registered dietician Lauren Slayton. She says beets are high in nitrates that are linked to better blood flow… Which helps your body use oxygen more efficiently, so you can exercise longer, or even faster, with less fatigue. Slayton says you can get the benefits by chopping up three beets, and juicing them with a squeeze of lemon.

Next, adding red RASPBERRIES to your smoothies can help you burn more fat. They contain ketones, which trigger the body to produce a hormone that breaks down fat cells faster than normal.

Finally, remember that after a tough workout, red TOMATO JUICE is the ideal recovery drink. Tomatoes are high in potassium, which our muscles need to prevent cramping and spasms. But we lose potassium during exercise. So, aim to have a serving of tomato juice after every workout.

To fight pain, load your salad with tomatoes and bell peppers (red, yellow, orange or green). They both contain plant compounds called salicylates – which reduce painful inflammation as well as aspirin. And since they’re all natural – no side effects! Researchers at UCLA say you should try to eat a heaping cup of tomatoes or bell peppers daily for the best results.

How do you know which ones? It’s mostly the red and orange ones… Like tomatoes and carrots. Food science professor Dr. Mary Ellen Camire says those vegetables have tough cell walls that can lock in all the good stuff, like vitamins and minerals. But cooking helps break down those walls so we can absorb the nutrients more easily. So, remember, red and orange vegetables are healthier when cooked.

avotomato-wpLike: Avocado and Tomato. Tomatoes are loaded with the antioxidant lycopene. But when you combine tomatoes with avocado, the unsaturated fat in the avocado helps the body absorb SEVEN TIMES the normal amount of lycopene! And lycopene inhibits the production of cancer cells.

Another good combo: Grilled steak and Brussels sprouts. There are compounds in Brussels sprouts which help the body flush out carcinogens. Including the carcinogens which form on charred meat during grilling.

Finally: Here’s a BAD food combo… Alcohol and energy drinks. Caffeine is a stimulant, while alcohol is a depressant. And when you overload your body with both at the same time, it puts tremendous stress on your heart… So don’t even think about ordering a Red Bull and Vodka.

If you have a little patch of yard, or even a window box, you can grow your own veggies! Just pick up a tomato plant, or a strawberry plant – or seeds for peppers or squash. They’re easy to tend and grow fast. And they’ll provide super-powered produce all year long.

Plus, when we grow our own fruits and vegetables, we’re inspired to eat more of them.

Researchers at the University of Florida recommend cutting certain plants out of your diet that are packed with solanine – an inflammatory chemical. They’re all from the nightshade family of plants, and include:
•Eggplants
•Potatoes
•Tomatoes or tomatillos.
Also, eliminate peppers – the sweet and the spicy ones. That also includes pimentos, which come from cherry peppers, and are found in processed meats and stuffed olives.
And steer clear of paprika and cayenne pepper.
The chemical in those vegetables is part of their natural defense system – like a naturally-occurring pesticide. So, try eliminating all of those foods for two weeks, and let me know if it helps.

That’s because we need a little fat to absorb the nutrients in vegetables! Things like lutein, lycopene, and beta-carotene are antioxidants you’ll find in tomatoes, carrots and romaine lettuce, but they’re fat-soluble. So if you don’t eat them with a little fat in your dressing, you’ll miss out. So go for oil and vinegar instead of fat-free ranch.

Being Italian, I LOVE tomatoes and olive oil and use them quite often in my cooking. Here’s a tip if you’re having tomatoes for dinner: Sauté them! The cancer-fighting antioxidant lycopene is absorbed better when you eat healthy fats, like olive oil, at the same time. So sauté your tomatoes with a little olive oil.
