If you’re constantly exhausted, even when you sleep enough, you might need more B‑12! The vitamin boosts production of energizing and mood-boosting chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin. That’s why the two classic signs of low B‑12 are lack of energy and blue moods! But the best natural sources of B‑12 aren’t so popular: Like sardines, mackerel and organ meats, including liver and kidneys. So ask your doctor about taking a thousand-microgram supplement. That can reverse fatigue and cut your risk of depression in half within 3 weeks. You can also get B-12 from foods like beef, salmon, milk, fortified cereals and soy products.

Getting 6 hours of sleep a night is as bad as not sleeping at all!

So, if you regularly get 6 hours – listen up. Researchers found people who slept 6 hours a night for 2 weeks functioned as poorly as people who stayed awake for two days straight. And the sleep-deprived people had NO IDEA they weren’t functioning properly. They thought they were perfectly fine. Basically, our sleepy brain is in denial! But that lack of sleep makes us eat more, act more emotionally, worry more, drive poorly, make more mistakes at work, and makes us 400% more likely to get sick! So don’t trust yourself to know whether you’re sleep-deprived, trust the clock. And if you’re getting only 6 hours, find a way to get more.

It could be your cluttered kitchen, workspace, or even your computer desktop. Researchers at Princeton University found clutter can trigger sensory overload – which forces the brain to work extra hard, tiring it out faster. That creates fatigue and uneasiness. So try straightening up your workspace, and see if it helps.

Being sleep-deprived makes us hungry!

Being sleep-deprived makes us hungrier, because we need extra calories to power through our day. According to King’s College London, if we get fewer than 6 hours of sleep, the next day we scarf down nearly 400 additional calories – usually junk food. Because a lack of sleep throws off our hunger hormones, making them spike. And since a lack of sleep makes us moody and irritable, we tend to reach for high-fat, high-calorie foods to make us feel better.

Are you among the 70% of people who have trouble sleeping at least once a week? Here’s a bizarre trick to try: Wear amber-tinted glasses a couple of hours before you go to bed. Because they’ll block out the blue light from computers, phones, and TV screens that stops production of sleep-inducing melatonin.

Columbia University Medical Center researchers had insomniacs wear amber-tinted glasses for two hours before bed every night for a week. Glasses that blocked 65% of the blue light, but left other wavelengths relatively untouched. Study participants also wore activity trackers that recorded the times they were asleep. The result: Those wearing amber glasses slept 30-minutes longer, woke up feeling more refreshed, AND got more solid sleep, with less tossing and turning.

Lead researcher Dr. Ari Schechter says, let’s be real… most people won’t give up their electronic devices before bedtime, so this may be the solution. Want to give amber-colored glasses a try? Just go on Amazon, and search for “blue-block glasses.” You can find some for $10 bucks. Try ‘em for two hours before bed every night.

Why did you sabotage yourself?

Have you ever done this? You knew you had an important day ahead – but you stayed up until all hours binging on your favorite shows. Why did you sabotage yourself?

Well, Indiana University psychology professor Dr. Edward Hirt says, when we sabotage ourselves, it’s our subconscious way of guarding ourselves against failure. Because, by being sleep deprived, we can blame the failure on a lack of sleep instead of not being good enough, smart enough, or prepared enough. Dr. Hirt says self-sabotage is incredibly common. His studies show the people who are most likely to do it are those who think trying and failing is the worst possible outcome. So they’d rather not try if they don’t think they can succeed. But in reality, people have more respect for those who do their best – no matter how things pan out in the end – than those who don’t give it their all.

So how do you know if they’ll work for YOU? Take one for 20 minutes, and see how you feel when you wake up. UC Riverside psychology professor Dr. Sara Mednick says if you wake refreshed, you’re one of the 45% of adults who’ll enjoy clearer, more creative thinking, and sharper motor skills after napping. But if you wake up groggy, naps just aren’t your thing and they NEVER will be! Dr. Mednick says the ability to wake up energized can’t be learned. It’s in your DNA. And you’re either wired to benefit from naps or you’re not! And if you’re a habitual napper who takes at least a couple naps a week, you can’t STOP! Because if you decrease the amount of sleep you’re getting – including those naps – your thinking and motor skill function will go down the tubes. It’s a huge productivity killer.

Socializing is exhausting – for our brain!

Even the most outgoing, extroverted person needs some alone time. Because socializing is exhausting – for our brain. That’s the conclusion of new research from the University of Helsinki. They found that the more social people were, the more they reported being in a positive mood and feeling lower levels of fatigue. But those effects wore off at the 3-hour mark. After that, people who were still interacting with a group saw their mood drop and their fatigue increase. And that was true for social butterflies AND introverts. That’s because socializing is really taxing on the brain. Conversations, processing language, activating your memory and reading body language use up a lot of mental energy. And for anyone, talking to a bunch of people for a long time – specifically 3-hours – is draining. So maybe we should all make sure our parties are only 3-hours long.

If you’re feeling sluggish and dehydrated, try these top “recovery” foods to help get your energy back. They come from registered dietician Deborah Tagliareni:

First: Eat watermelon. It’s got “water” right in the name. Plus, it’s full of lycopene, an antioxidant also found in tomatoes. But watermelon has 4 times as much lycopene as tomatoes. So it’s a powerhouse when it comes to preventing and repairing free-radical damage.

Also, eat some cucumbers. Next, to lettuce, they have the highest water content of ANY vegetables! Plus, cucumbers have key B vitamins that support your metabolism by converting carbohydrates into energy.

We yawn less in hot weather.

That’s because yawning helps cool the brain, so it can function at maximum capacity and help us stay alert. But when it’s hot out, we don’t get the brain-cooling benefit from inhaling boiling hot air. In fact, researchers found people yawn most when it’s around 68 degrees. And yes, being sleepy and stressed makes us yawn too because both of those physical states cause the brain to overheat.
