Do you snore? Try these exercises to firm up your soft palate – that’s the throat tissue that gets flabby and contributes to snoring.

Exercise one: Open your teeth, keep your lips closed, and say “ahhhh,” like you would for the doctor.

Exercise two: Push your tongue against the roof of your mouth and move it back as far as you can.

Do each of them 20 times, 3 times a day. In a few weeks, your throat muscles will be stronger, and your snoring should be reduced by nearly 40%.

If you don’t want to sound like a stereotypical granny or grandpa, with a creaky voice, sing more! According to the British Voice Association, people who sang once a week had voices that sounded steadier and smoother as they aged. Ear, nose and throat surgeon, Dr. John Rubin says a-third of people over 65 suffer from voice problems, including hoarseness and weakness. And we have less lung capacity as we age – so by age 80, our voice may be half the volume it was at age 20. But singing is like CrossFit for your voice. It helps you control air pressure and the movement of your vocal folds. And that can preserve your voice as you age.

We know honey is good for a cough… But it also helps dogs! If your pet comes back from the dog park with kennel cough, give him some honey! The anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties can soothe a dog’s irritated throat, just as it does for us. Check with your vet first, of course, but the typical dose for a medium-sized dog is 1 teaspoon, two times a day, drizzled over their food.

Have you ever choked on something, or had a coughing fit and said, “Something went down the wrong pipe!” That’s actually a fairly accurate expression, according to pulmonary specialist, Dr. Richard Wunderink. He says we have two tubes that start at the back of our throat… One is the esophagus that leads to our stomach. The other is our trachea, which goes to our lungs. And if a sip of something accidentally goes down your trachea, you start sputtering and choking to get rid of it. To prevent that from happening, simply take smaller sips.

If you have to cough – cough! Don’t hold back. Because doing so constricts your throat muscles, making them even more irritated. Then, when you do cough, it’ll be even worse and more painful. So just like with a sneeze – don’t stifle a cough.

I’m talking about honey. It calms a cough MORE effectively than the active ingredient in most over-the-counter medicines. That’s according to Penn State researchers. One reason? The nerves that stimulate coughing interact with the brain regions that detect sweetness. So, the taste of honey may calm the part of the brain that makes you cough. Another reason? Honey is thick, so it coats your throat. Plus, it has antibacterial properties to kill germs in your throat. The prescription dose? Swallow 2 teaspoons every 4 to 5 hours during the day – and a half hour before you go to bed.

Research suggests that giving your vocal chords a 20-minute daily workout strengthens flabby throat tissues. Do that every day for 3 months and you’ll be half as likely to snore. And since the average daily commute is 23 minutes, try singing during your commute.
