Studies show that 56% of us have trouble sleeping between Thanksgiving and New Year’s…And it’s often because of adrenal exhaustion. That’s where high levels of the stress hormone cortisol overwhelm your adrenal gland, causing a drop in the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin.
How can you improve your adrenal function? Natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends a low-glycemic diet…That means, avoid white flour and sugar…And stick with whole grains…As well as protein-rich foods, like meat, poultry, dairy, soy products, beans and lentils.

If you’re not counting calories during the holidays, doctors say you should at least watch your salt intake. Because hospitals see a lot of heart patients between Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas. Most of the time it’s because of too much salt in holiday meals. Salt can be very dangerous because it promotes water retention, which can be fatal for anyone with a weak heart. To avoid a trip to the Emergency Room, instead of flavoring your holiday dishes with salt, use herbs, spices and other natural flavorings.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, you may feel the need to start walking more…

But, are you going to use a pedometer to keep track of your steps? Then know this: Your gadget may not be accurate!

Researchers at the University of Tennessee tested popular brands of pedometers – and found that some of them were off by up as much as 33%…Which means, if you walked 10,000 steps – in reality it could be closer to 6,000.

To find out how precise your step-counter is, take 20 steps at a normal walking pace, then check the display. If it’s off by more than 3 steps, it’s inaccurate. But don’t just toss it! Make sure you have it positioned correctly. Most pedometers have to remain upright to work properly.

Before you dig into that Thanksgiving spread, take time to think about what’s in front of you.

Here’s an eating guide:

First: The bird. If you’re preparing the turkey, don’t buy the “self-basting” kind, which is injected with a solution that’s supposed to help “improve” the flavor and juiciness of the meat. Those turkeys have nearly twice the fat and salt as the old-fashioned kind.

Next: Cranberry sauce. Cranberries are high in vitamin C and tannins, the heart-healthy compounds also found in red wine.

Finally: Sweet potatoes. One potato has nearly zero fat and only 120 calories – not bad at all. Sweet potatoes also contain an antioxidant that fights cancer, and reduces the risk of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Just don’t top yours with a million mini-marshmallows!

Finally, watch out for gravy, which is basically salty, flavored fat.

Count those calories during the holidays!

dark-meat

Here’s a Thanksgiving question you may have been wondering about: Is dark-meat turkey really that bad for you? The answer: Go ahead and reach for a drumstick! According to registered dietician Joanne Larsen, turkey is a good source of low-fat protein and nutrients, no matter which cut you choose. Also, dark meat has only 8 calories and 1 gram of fat more per ounce than white meat – but it has about twice as much riboflavin and zinc, which are key for energy and a healthy immune system. Dark meat also provides nearly two-and-a-half times as many heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

With Thanksgiving coming up, know this about deep-fryers:

According to the National Fire Protection Association, those deep-fat turkey fryers are a leading cause of home fires. Here’s what happens: When the cooking oil bubbles up over the sides, it hits the cooking fire underneath, and it either creates a larger fire or it explodes! So be safe and fry your turkey outside and 10 FEET AWAY from any wooden structures.

If you’re making a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, use canned 100% pumpkin. It doesn’t have any preservatives, salt or additives. Plus, it has less moisture than fresh pumpkin – which means, ounce for ounce, it contains more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
