Look at the last loving text you were sent and blow up the font like you’re majorly farsighted. According to German research, reading upbeat, positive messages can lift us out of a funk. But by blowing up the font to 28 points or larger, we can make those positive feelings last 20% longer! That’s because our brain interprets larger words as more important. So those loving text messages will have a more powerful effect.

Whether you’re getting a shot, Botox or a mole removed, text a friend right before-hand. The distraction and social connection can make it less painful! Researchers from Cornell found people who texted a loved one before minor surgical procedures were 4 times less likely to need pain meds than people who didn’t text.

The twinge you get after staring at your screen all day? Try Tai Chi! Dr. Paul Christo is a professor of pain medicine at Johns Hopkins. And his research shows it can relieve persistent pain. And you can start NOW with these moves Dr. Christo recommends: Sit up straight, pinch your shoulder blades together, hold for a few seconds, then release. Then turn your head to the right and hold it for a couple seconds. And do the same on the left. Do those Tai Chi moves several times a day, and your text neck should feel a lot better.

Did you know that the average person hasn’t written by hand for over 40 days? And according to a new survey, most of us say that when we DO write by hand, it’s just a sloppy note to ourselves – like a grocery list. Experts say we’re writing less because we’re sending more messages by text. But know this: Studies show that writing by hand is one of the easiest ways to boost memory and creativity. That’s because it reinforces information we’ve learned, and stimulates the part of our brain that processes thoughts.

That’s when you think your phone’s ringing or vibrating, even when it’s not. Well, would you believe that 89% of people experience that sensation?

Psychologist Michelle Drouin says it’s because we’ve become so accustomed to listening for our phones – and we place such significance on those texts, alerts and calls – that we’re hyper-alert, all the time. Like a mom listening for her newborn’s cry, there’s a part of our brain that’s always on-call, waiting for that sound from our phones. And we’re particularly likely to imagine those phantom dings and vibrations when we’re stressed or anticipating an important message.

So what can we do about it? Dr. Drouin says, for a few hours every day, move your phone out of reach and turn it off or to silent mode.

It may seem obvious, but the journal PLOS One says runners who talk on the phone or check text messages don’t get a great workout. Their intensity drops off. So turn off notifications and silence incoming calls… And tune into your workout playlist, instead. Because runners listening to music enjoyed their workout more, ran faster, and burned more calories than those who totally unplugged.

Text a friend or loved one! Researchers at Loma Linda University found that regular text message conversations with friends and family are a huge mood booster. That’s because having support and encouragement at our fingertips triggers production of mood boosting brain chemicals. In fact, regularly sending and receiving text messages helped 72% of adult women feel less sad and overwhelmed.

Because – according to ER doctors – distracted walking leads to more injuries per mile than distracted driving. In fact, as many as 10% of ER visits are caused by accidents involving cellphones. The main problem is that people staring at a screen aren’t paying attention to what’s in front of them. So, they walk into walls, fall down stairs, and step out into traffic. That’s why city engineers in London have cushioned the light poles in high-pedestrian areas – and it’s dramatically reduced the number of walking injuries.

Which refers to the pain some people feel after hours of texting, with their hands curved around their device in the shape of claws. The repetitive motion puts a lot of strain on the tendons and muscles in our fingers, wrists and forearms…and can cause numbness or cramping. The fix? Before every texting session, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aaron Daluiski recommends flexing your hands backwards and forwards at the wrist, and stretching your fingers apart as wide as possible.

ImageYou may have Computer Vision Syndrome! Or CVS – like the pharmacy chain. Symptoms of CVS include headaches, blurred vision, and focusing problems, and it can affect anyone who spends more than 2 hours straight per day starring at a computer, TV, cell phone or tablet. That’s because our eyes are designed to view 3D objects, not flat images. That’s according to the American Optometric Association. To avoid CVS, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
