You might want to get your vitamin D levels checked. A new study from Finland found adults low on “D” were twice as likely to experience frequent head pain, compared to those with plenty of vitamin D. The reason? Because there are “D” receptors in the area of the brain linked to pain. And if there isn’t enough vitamin D available, the receptors may transmit pain signals from your stiff muscles, instead, triggering a headache. It’s tricky to get sufficient vitamin D from food and sunlight alone. But talk to your doctor before you start taking a supplement, to make sure it’s the right treatment for you.

Don’t ignore it – or try to suppress it. Instead, consider how you’re feeling and label it. As in, “I feel overwhelmed.” Or “I feel pressured,” or frustrated, or angry. Psychologist Hans Hagemann calls it cognitive jujitsu. It works because when we label our feelings, it activates our prefrontal cortex – the rational, analytical side of the brain, and switches off the limbic system, the area fueled by stress and emotion. So, during your next meltdown, try cognitive jujitsu. Analyze your feelings, and label them. By the time you’re done, you’ll feel more in control.

That can make your jaw tight or even cause you to grind your teeth, and trigger pain. So, try this exercise from physical therapists at Chicago’s Spine and Sports Rehabilitation Center: Put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, slightly behind your front teeth. Then, slowly open and close your mouth 10 times. That’s actually a move doctors recommend to patients with TMJ to reduce tension in the jaw.

Registered dietician Kristen Smith says one serving of ice cream provides 10% of the calcium we need daily. And calcium is proven to reduce tension and anxiety. Plus, the fat in ice cream helps our body absorb minerals and nutrients that help regulate mood. Which is why people who eat full-fat foods have lower rates of depression than people on low-fat diets. So how much ice cream can we have daily? One half-cup. That’s about the size of a tennis ball. If you’re watching your calories, get slow-churned ice cream. It contains more air, which means fewer calories per serving.

Wear sunglasses. You’ll not only look cool, you’ll stop squinting and relax your face. Doing that will set off a chain reaction… and you’ll end up relaxing your neck, shoulders and upper body. That’s according to marathon running coach Andrew Kastor. He says that even a tiny bit of tension in your upper body can throw off your form, which means you won’t stride as powerfully. And tight muscles work harder and use more energy than relaxed ones – so you’ll burn out more quickly. So wear some shades and leave everyone in your dust.

Close your eyes and tap your fingers all over your face and scalp, using both hands, just like you would if you were typing on a keyboard. Massage therapists call that technique “tabla playing” – after the traditional Indian percussion instrument. And it supposedly relaxes tense muscles and reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Did you know that gripping the steering wheel too tightly – or resting your wrists on the wheel – raises your risk, of carpal tunnel syndrome? That’s according to pain management specialist, Dr. Helen Schilling.

Her suggestion: Wrap your fingers around the wheel, keep your wrists straight, and keep your arms and fingers relaxed to reduce the tension in your wrists and forearms.
