Warm some milk to room temperature, then swish it around your mouth for 5 minutes, 5 times a day. A recent study found that can dramatically reduce tooth sensitivity. And for over 50% of people, it provided total relief within 10 days! That’s because milk has a protein called casein, which thickens tooth enamel. And milk helps protect sensitive nerve endings by plugging open pores in tooth enamel with calcium phosphate. So swish room temperature milk around your mouth for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for tooth sensitivity.

Sugar-free gum or mints? The gum wins! According to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, gum-chewing produces more saliva, which clears away the natural acids and leftover food particles that cause cavities. And Xylitol – the sweetener in sugar-free gum – eliminates bacteria that damage teeth and make your breath stink. Sugar-free mints have a similar effect – but because they dissolve quickly, they create less saliva, and don’t do as much to protect your teeth. But if you have pets you should avoid anything that contains xylitol because it’s toxic to them.

Well, don’t expect it to clear away 20-years’ worth of yellow from cigarettes, but it can scrub away daily coffee and wine stains. That’s from the UCLA School of Dentistry. A lot of whitening gums contain baking soda, which polishes teeth. But really, ANY gum can help erase superficial stains. Because it’s really your saliva doing most of the work. Chewing gum increases the output of saliva – and saliva is antimicrobial – so it kills bacteria and washes away debris that can stain teeth.

Ladies – here’s another reason to floss your teeth daily:

It could reduce your risk for breast cancer! Researchers at the University of Buffalo found women with gum disease have a 14% higher risk for breast cancer. They believe it’s because mouth bacteria enters the bloodstream – where it can contribute to chronic inflammation, and compromise breast tissue over time. So, daily flossing is key to preventing gum disease… and pay special attention to your molars. They’re set wider apart, so more food particles get stuck there, boosting bacterial growth.

Botox has another new use: Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding. About 13% of the population grinds their teeth in their sleep, and Botox is now being used to help. A strategically placed shot of Botox can prevent the muscles in your jaw from contracting as hard, without freezing them completely. And the effects last up to 6 months. The Bruxism Association says the research is convincing, and Botox is just as effective as other treatments, like mouth guards.

If you want to keep your teeth white, shiny, and cavity-free, stop snacking after dinner!

That’s the gist of research from the University of Copenhagen. Which found that a piece of fruit does as much damage as a bowl of ice cream. The reason? Because we need saliva to remove leftover food particles from our mouth. But since we produce much less saliva at night, the sugars and acids from foods and drinks stick to our teeth longer, which can lead to serious damage and staining.

So, if you eat or drink at night – make sure you wait at least half an hour for your tooth enamel to re-harden, then brush before bed.

One out of every three people don’t. That’s according to a new report from the CDC. They asked over 9,000 people how many days a week they flossed their teeth. One in three said “never.” One in three said “just once a week” – and the last third were daily flossers. Now, that’s probably not a surprise to most dentists. But if you’re in the “never floss” group, the tartar buildup could eventually attack your teeth and gums, causing your teeth to fall out. To keep your teeth, the American Dental Association says you should floss at least once a week.

When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush?

Experts say it should be every 3 months… Because when the bristles start to fray, they leave plaque behind, which can lead to infected, bleeding gums. And you’ll brush too hard to compensate for those frayed bristles… Which can easily lead to mega-sensitive gums and teeth, V‑shaped notches near your gum-line, and even tooth loss. So get a new toothbrush every season, and you’ll get to keep all your teeth.

When it comes to oral health, remember the number “4”

That’s the number of NEW toothbrushes you should buy every year. One for each season. According to the USC School of Dentistry, after 3 months the bristles are too worn down to clean your teeth effectively and remove plaque. Plus, by that point, your toothbrush is crawling with germs. And if you’ve been sick, swap out your toothbrush if it’s in a holder where it could touch another family member’s toothbrush. Because you won’t re-infect yourself – but your germs could get transferred to someone else’s toothbrush.

Here’s how to make sure your teeth are healthy…

If you want to keep your teeth healthy, make sure your dentist knows what medications you’re taking. Dr. Reid Blackwelder is with the American Academy of Family Physicians. He says drugs like antihistamines, antidepressants and blood pressure meds can slow the production of saliva. And a dry mouth allows bacteria and plaque to build up faster, which can raise your risk for gum disease. So, knowing what meds you’re taking can help your dentist better protect your teeth and gums.
