Why do we eat so much when we’re stressed?
Because we can’t taste things as well! Now, 90% of us admit to stress eating – but stress suppresses our ability to taste. So we eat more – trying to taste our food! So when you’re stressed, reach for something spicy or strong tasting, like a pickle. Or, relax first without food. Take a walk, calm down, and when you eat, your taste buds will be functioning more normally and you’ll eat less.

You know those little taste-test bites you take while cooking? They don’t do as much damage to your diet as you may think! Dr. Brian Wansink is a nutritional science expert. He says people who nibble while preparing food – then sit down to a full meal – eat 57% FEWER calories than if they wait to eat until the cooking is done. Dr. Wansink says having a small snack actually shuts down hunger pangs and food cravings… So when you do sit down to eat, you’re not ravenous and end up overeating. So, go ahead and sample your cooking!

Does your dog eat grass from time to time? Some people think animals eat grass to induce vomiting when they’re not feeling well. But researchers from Tufts University say most dogs eat grass because they like the taste and it aids digestion.

A new study in the journal Neuroscience Letters found that our taste buds actually contain receptors for certain stress hormones. Which means, when we’re stressed, a cookie won’t taste as sweet, and a bowl of cheese doodles won’t be as satisfying – and we’ll end up craving even more. The fix? Munch on something crunchy AND healthy – like radishes or carrots. Studies show that can help reduce stress, because the act of crunching relieves tension in the jaw – but the veggies won’t add many calories.

You can stop your worries cold – simply by brushing your teeth!
Clinical psychologists say that brushing your teeth instantly stimulates most of your senses…… Including taste, smell, touch and hearing. In fact, the act is so distracting, it interrupts the worry cycle. Plus, the minty scent increases production of calming beta brainwaves.

Because 30 minutes of daily meditation has been shown to shorten migraines by a mega 3 hours! That’s according to Wake Forest School of Medicine. And the best part is, you don’t have to spend a solid 30 minutes Ohm-ing…You can spread it out.  One of the easiest ways is to incorporate meditation into things you’re already doing. For example, when you’re brushing your teeth – have a moment of mindfulness. Focus on the taste of the toothpaste, the sensation of brushing, the sound it makes. You can also have a mini-meditation while you’re eating – focus on the smell, taste and texture of your food. Do that 30 minutes a day, and you’ll really cut down on migraine pain.

Even your favorite food won’t taste as good on an airplane.

The issue is that the air pressure at that altitude deadens our taste buds – kind of like having a cold. Also, our perception of salty and sweet drops 30% at high altitudes – so food tastes blander. On top of that, the lack of humidity in the cabin dries out our nose – so we can’t smell our food as well. And without our sense of smell, food tastes duller.

The “Eat This, Not That” guys (EatThis.com) have declared which French fries are the best! They weren’t just looking at which ones taste best – but also which ones aren’t so bad for us, health-wise. And the winner is: A small order of McDonald’s French fries! They’re surprisingly harmless in small amounts. They only have 230 calories – and about a third of the sodium we’re allowed to have daily. And if you downgrade from a large order to a small twice a week, you’ll drop 8 pounds within a year.
