Just exercise a little. Say, by going for a 10-minute walk or biking around the neighborhood. A study in Human Resource Management found regular exercisers are better at handling work-life conflicts, compared to people who slack off on fitness. Because exercise is proven to lower stress, which in turn “empowers” us to tackle tough tasks at work and at home. That means, the next time the boss dumps extra work on your desk, you’ll be less likely to feel overwhelmed if you’ve carved out at least a few minutes a day for exercise.

Get more exercise! Researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand found that the oxygen-rich blood flooding the brain during exercise helps sharpen the mind. And adults who exercised regularly, regardless of age, performed better on difficult cognitive tasks compared with those who exercised less. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s 60 minutes of vigorous exercise, like running sprints, taking a brisk 10-minute walk around the block three or four times a day, or doing light resistance training in your own home.

Take a walk through the hills, or across uneven ground. That’ll help you burn 13 more calories per minute, and engage more muscles than walking on a smooth, level path. That’s the latest from a study at the University of Rome. If you’re not near a trail, you can get a similar calorie-burning boost by walking on a treadmill raised to an incline of 3 percent.

Do it in 2 or 3-minute increments called micro-rejuvenation. According to Dartmouth College, all you need to do is step away from whatever you’re focused on at least once an hour, and give your brain a break. You can take a brisk walk, or scroll through happy photos on your phone. Because spending even a few moments changing up your mindset can make you feel relaxed, re-focused and re-energized.

Skip the sleeping pills, and take a walk instead! The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says over-the-counter sleep aids can make you feel even MORE tired because they contain antihistamines, which can trigger daytime drowsiness. But the Journal of Sleep Research found insomniacs who got 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most days fell asleep faster and slept longer than those who didn’t exercise. Because exercise helps regulate your internal clock, leaving you feeling drowsy at bedtime, and reduces the stress and anxiety that can keep you awake.

Here’s how to get rid of it ASAP, according to lung specialist Dr. Neil Schachter:

First, take a HOT shower when you wake up. Lying down causes virus-laden mucus to drain to the back of your nose and throat, making it harder to breathe. But hot, steamy air loosens mucus, helping you clear it OUT by coughing or blowing your nose.

Next, the more water you drink, the faster your body can flush out viruses.

And even a 5-minute walk slightly raises our core temperature, like when we have a fever, which can literally bake our cold germs away.

The fix? Take a brisk 5-minute walk every hour. University of Colorado School of Medicine researchers found people who did so-called “micro-bouts” of exercise felt 31% less tired, more cheerful and more alert all afternoon, compared to those who sat for 6 hours straight, without any breaks. The reason? Because short spurts of activity help offset the stress, reduced metabolism, and energy-draining effects of too much sitting.

Take a brisk morning walk! Researchers at George Mason University say exercise releases feel-good hormones, triggering a mood boost that can last up to 48 hours. Plus, starting the day on a high note creates a so-called “cascade of positivity” – where one good thing leads to another. It increases the likelihood you’ll get more done, have positive interactions with others, and have less impact from negative events. And the longer you work out, and the more social you make it – like walking with a friend – the happier you’ll feel.

Medical experts call sitting the new smoking – that’s how bad it is for our health. So, do this if you’ve been seated for hours – and can’t get up and take a walk: Move your feet. It instantly wakes up your body, according to kinesiology experts. Spread your toes, rotate your ankles, and spell out the alphabet with your big toe. It’ll get your blood flowing and make you more alert.

Feeling tense? Here’s how to relax, fast: Take a two-minute “stress break” every hour to get your blood flowing… say, by standing up and swinging your arms, or taking a brisk walk. Researchers at Loyola University in Baltimore found that physical activity helps calm the brain’s anxiety center and eases stress, which can quickly lower blood pressure by about 4 points.
