Here’s a list of things you may not know about public pools and swimming that come directly from trained lifeguards:

First: “Floaties” don’t really keep kids safe. In fact, the inflatable belts some kids wear can just as easily hold them upside down in water as right side up! And floaties on their arms are useless if their head’s underwater! In other words: Lifeguards say there’s no replacement for watching your kids at all times, and teaching them basic water safety.

Next: You should NEVER be able to smell the chlorine. It either means pool maintenance used too much chlorine, or somebody had an “accident” in the pool. Either way, chlorine odors can cause coughing, burning eyes and nausea. So, leave the water ASAP if you experience those symptoms.

One more thing lifeguards want you to know about water safety: Pool rules exist for a reason. It turns out, most injuries in public swimming pools are not caused by drowning. Instead, they’re caused by people running and slipping on wet tiles, or jumping on top of other swimmers.

…from the Water Quality and Health Council.

First: 1‑in‑five adults admit to peeing in the pool.

Also, nearly 70% of swimmers don’t shower before swimming. That just adds to the germ soup already in the pool.

Then, if your eyes are turning red, get out of that pool! It’s NOT a reaction to chlorine, because the only thing that causes pool red-eye is bodily fluids and waste.

Finally, a chemically, chlorine smell doesn’t mean there’s too much chlorine in the pool – it means there’s not enough – and what IS in there is reacting with waste matter.

…know that these breeds don’t do well in water:

Pugs. They have such short nasal passages they can experience breathing difficulties and easily drown.

Don’t swim with bulldogs, either. Their bodies are so dense and compact, they can sink.

Next: Dachshunds and Basset Hounds. Their short legs make swimming difficult.

Finally, keep your Maltese out of the pool. They can paddle just fine – but prolonged exposure to wetness and cold can give them arthritis.

If you want abs of steel, skip the crunches and planks, and do cardio! Yes, planks strengthen your core, but you won’t SEE that core without aerobic exercise. In fact, exercise scientists from Auburn University found people doing abs exercises for 6 weeks lost NO abdominal fat, because we can’t spot-reduce fat. But consistent aerobic exercise, like running or swimming, plus strength training and cutting calories DOES lead to weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.

Now that it’s wintertime and we still need to exercise, do you swim at the local YMCA – or spend all your free time in the pool? If you spend more than 6 hours in a pool every week, you could be putting your teeth at risk! Because pool water that contains too much chlorine is dangerously acidic… and when highly-acidic water comes into contact with tooth enamel for extended periods, you can develop so-called “swimmer’s calculus”… a build-up of calcium that can turn your teeth yellow or brown. Excess chlorine can also leave your teeth brittle and sensitive. So, if you swim frequently, brush your teeth when you climb out of the pool. Also, consider using a fluoride rinse to help strengthen your teeth.

If you want to reveal 6-pack abs by the pool or at the beach – skip the crunches, and even the planks! We now know it’s all about the cardio. Exercise scientists from Auburn University did a study and found that when people did ab-exercises for 6 weeks, they didn’t lose ANY abdominal fat. That’s because we can’t spot-reduce fat. We lose it all over. However, consistent amounts of aerobic exercise – like running or swimming – combined with strength training and a reduced calorie diet DOES result in weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.

To avoid an inflamed cornea, don’t wear your contact lenses when you shower or swim. Because bacteria-filled water can get trapped under your lenses, leading to an inflamed cornea. It’s painful – and it could even cause blindness. And nearly a million people get it every year. If you need to wear contacts or you forget to take them out – after you get out of the water, disinfect them, ASAP. Or if your contacts are the one-day disposable kind, throw them away after a shower or swim, and put in a fresh pair.

Wait 30 minutes before you go swimming – or not…

Let’s put this old wives’ tale to rest once and for all. No, you don’t have to wait 30 minutes after eating to swim. The theory was that, after eating, the process of digestion would divert blood flow away from extremities – causing leg cramps, which could lead to drowning. But the truth is: Eating lunch and then jumping in the pool won’t cause any problems.

Let’s bust some summertime myths…

• How about this one: You can’t swim after eating. That’s false. Years ago, medical experts thought it was dangerous to swim within an hour of eating… Because they believed digestion diverted blood away from muscles, and could lead to dangerous leg cramps. But today, even the American Red Cross says it’s OK to swim after eating.
• One more summer myth: Mayonnaise causes picnic poisoning. Again, that’s False. Mayo earned its bad rep back when people ate mayo they made at home… Because it contained raw eggs, which can be full of harmful bacteria. But today’s store-bought mayonnaise is pasteurized and sterile, so that’s not an issue. In fact, a recent study in the Journal of Food Protection found that professionally-made mayonnaise actually slows the growth of salmonella and other bacteria on food… Just keep in mind that all perishable food can spoil if it sits out for more than two hours.

mix-up-workoutIf you’ve been hitting the gym on a regular basis, but you’re not seeing results any more – it’s time to change things up! According to fitness expert Mary Jayne Rogers, when you’re starting a new exercise routine, your body isn’t as efficient, so you burn more calories…But as you get used to the exercise and become more fit – the same routine require much less energy. So, if you’ve been swimming laps, try the elliptical. And if you’ve been sticking with yoga, it may be time to try Pilates. When your body gets a new challenge, you’ll see results again.
