It’s not just hot weather that can make us sweat.

Here are some surprising sweat triggers:

Large meals. Eating a big meal raises body temperature. And as your metabolism kicks in to help you digest it, it can make you sweat.

You can also start sweating if you miss a meal and have low blood sugar. Because the body produces insulin when it expects a meal. And if it doesn’t get one, the body can go into ‘fight or flight’ survival mode – causing sweating.

Our meds can also make us sweat, particularly painkillers like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen. If that’s an issue, talk to your doctor about taking pain meds that won’t make you sweat.

Do you need to replace lost sodium in your body?

Even on a hot day, when you’re sweating like a beast – you most likely DON’T need to increase your salt intake to replace what you’ve lost. That’s because most of us consume more sodium than we need on a daily basis. The only people who might need extra salt are those who work outdoors, or exercise for 3 or 4 hours at a time. And for those people, a V-8 juice should do it.

Go ahead and enjoy the salty snacks you like – like chips and pretzels – just make sure you exercise afterward. That’s because exercise naturally reduces your body’s response to sodium – by sweating. It also helps your blood vessels relax and allows for better blood flow.

If you’d like to turn your mood around, experts say you should not only hang out with a friend who always seems happy. Go exercise with them, too! So, go for a hike, or take a yoga class and put your mat next to theirs. Because when we can smell the sweat of positive people, their chemicals influence us and activate positive feel-good brain chemicals in us. In fact, in a study at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, people exposed to the sweat of happy people smiled more themselves… and those who were exposed to the sweat of negative people frowned more.

It’s all mind over matter!

When it comes to enjoying exercise, it’s mind over matter. Researchers at Brock University tested competitive cyclists in heat and humidity. But half the group was taught to reframe negative feelings as positive ones. So instead of thinking “Man it’s hot; I’m dying!” they thought “I can handle it.” After 2 weeks, those with a positive mindset could pedal 25% longer. The other group saw NO improvement during hot, humid exercise.  And the technique can benefit ANY workout. Just ditch negative phrases like “This is tough” for positive ones, like “I’ve got this.”

This is how to cool down in the Summer heat!

Before you sip iced tea or iced coffee to cool off in sweltering heat, consider trying a HOT drink instead. It sounds counterintuitive, but it may cool you down better than something ice-cold.

Loughborough University researchers in the UK found hot drinks increase body temperature, and can trigger sweat, which is the body’s way of cooling off. That’s why many of the top tea-consuming countries – like India – have hot climates.

But other research shows cold drinks work best in extremely humid conditions since sweat evaporates more slowly in humid weather.

So when in Phoenix, drink hot tea. And in New Orleans or New York City, drink it iced.

Can you really sweat out toxins?

No, according to human physiology professor Dr. Juan del Coso. He says a tiny amount of toxin is released in sweat, but not enough for measurable health benefits. If we really need to purge toxins, our kidneys release it into our urine. And as far as sweating out toxins in a sauna – that may actually backfire. Because when we sweat profusely, our body thinks it should conserve water, so we pee LESS! So we end up hanging on to any toxins longer! If you really feel you have to detox, your best bet is to load up on produce and water. That’ll help move things through your system faster.

But who wants to come back to work dripping with sweat? The best move is to cool down quickly with cold water – inside and out. We continue to sweat after a workout because our core body temperature is still above normal. If we lower our core temperature, we’ll stop sweating. So after your workout, drink 12 ounces of cold water slowly – so you don’t get brain freeze. Then, take a shower that’s as cold as you can stand. If you’re still sweating when you get out of the shower, drink more cold water. That comes from Dr. David Nielson, who specializes in treating people for excessive sweating.

If you’re dripping with sweat during Cross Fit, while the guy next to you seems dry… Don’t sweat it! You may actually be more fit than they are! Sports scientist Dr. Lindsay Baker says sweat is how the body cools itself when our core temperature rises. And because a fit person is better at regulating their core temperature, they start sweating sooner – and more profusely – than someone who’s not as fit. You may also be bigger than the runner NOT sweating next to you. Bigger people sweat more than smaller people, because their bodies produce more heat. That’s why men tend to sweat more than women.

Sweating and being ‘in-shape’ vs. ‘out of shape’

If you break into a sweat climbing a flight of stairs, it may NOT be because you’re unfit. It may be the opposite! In studies, long-distance runners started sweating sooner than couch-potato guys under the same conditions. That’s because sweating is a fit person’s way of cooling the body down quickly. And people who aren’t as physically fit aren’t as efficient at regulating body temperature.
