It’s not just hot weather that can make us sweat.

Here are some surprising sweat triggers:

Large meals. Eating a big meal raises body temperature. And as your metabolism kicks in to help you digest it, it can make you sweat.

You can also start sweating if you miss a meal and have low blood sugar. Because the body produces insulin when it expects a meal. And if it doesn’t get one, the body can go into ‘fight or flight’ survival mode – causing sweating.

Our meds can also make us sweat, particularly painkillers like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen. If that’s an issue, talk to your doctor about taking pain meds that won’t make you sweat.

Do you need to replace lost sodium in your body?

Even on a hot day, when you’re sweating like a beast – you most likely DON’T need to increase your salt intake to replace what you’ve lost. That’s because most of us consume more sodium than we need on a daily basis. The only people who might need extra salt are those who work outdoors, or exercise for 3 or 4 hours at a time. And for those people, a V-8 juice should do it.

Go ahead and enjoy the salty snacks you like – like chips and pretzels – just make sure you exercise afterward. That’s because exercise naturally reduces your body’s response to sodium – by sweating. It also helps your blood vessels relax and allows for better blood flow.

If you’d like to turn your mood around, experts say you should not only hang out with a friend who always seems happy. Go exercise with them, too! So, go for a hike, or take a yoga class and put your mat next to theirs. Because when we can smell the sweat of positive people, their chemicals influence us and activate positive feel-good brain chemicals in us. In fact, in a study at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, people exposed to the sweat of happy people smiled more themselves… and those who were exposed to the sweat of negative people frowned more.

Here’s some advice from the book, “The Silent Language Of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help or Hurt” by Dr. Carol Goman: Don’t judge a person’s body language based on one move. For example, you may have heard that people who are lying touch their nose because the stress of lying triggers histamine, which makes the nose itch. But that one move isn’t proof that someone’s lying. Instead, we should look for a cluster of behaviors. Like, they touch their nose, AND they’re sweating profusely, AND they avoid direct questions. When you combine all those, the person is probably lying.

Hang out in a sauna at least 4 times a week! Finnish researchers analyzed 20 years’ worth of data from the Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. And they found people who spent 20-minutes in a sauna on most days were 66% less likely to be diagnosed with any form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. The researchers aren’t sure WHY sweating in a 170-degree sauna lowers dementia risk… but they believe it’s partly because heat increases the resting heart rate, which sends more oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

So you bring a towel to the gym and use it to wipe down machines before you use them. Well, if it’s a plain ol’ cotton towel, it’s not doing much good! Microbiologists from the University of Arizona found that a cotton towel just moves MRSA from one spot to another. It hitchhikes on your towel. And if you use it to wipe off sweat, too, you’re transferring the bacteria to your skin. A better bet is to bring a microfiber towel to the gym. It’s less likely to transfer germs and bacteria from one surface to the next because the tighter weave traps germs in the fibers. Just make sure you toss it in a hot-water wash after every gym visit.

Before you sip iced tea or iced coffee to cool off in sweltering heat, consider trying a HOT drink instead. It sounds counterintuitive, but it may cool you down better than something ice-cold.

Loughborough University researchers in the UK found hot drinks increase body temperature, and can trigger sweat, which is the body’s way of cooling off. That’s why many of the top tea-consuming countries – like India – have hot climates.

But other research shows cold drinks work best in extremely humid conditions since sweat evaporates more slowly in humid weather.

So when in Phoenix, drink hot tea. And in New Orleans or New York City, drink it iced.

You know the drill… you hit the gym hard, then run errands in your sweaty clothes. Well, you may want to rinse off and change instead.

Dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman says even a little sweat raises our skin’s bacterial count – which includes the microbes linked to pimples. And when that excess bacteria gets trapped against the skin with damp clothing, it can trigger backne – or back acne… butt-ne – butt acne… or red bumps caused by inflamed hair follicles all over your body. You can also develop rashes along your body’s crevices caused by the same fungus that leads to athlete’s foot. You don’t need to take a shower immediately to avoid rashes and acne… but make sure you rinse off, and change into clean, dry clothes.

How long have you had your throw pillows?

Well, anything that gets used a lot should be replaced about every 18 months. That’s because the fabric and foam core gradually pick up dead skin, dust mites, sweat, and even fungus – which can trigger breathing problems, from allergies to asthma. So, if your throw pillows seem a bit flat, or they don’t spring back when you fold them in half – toss them and go shopping.
