Get outside on your lunch hour – or at least hang out by a sunny window. Getting just 15 minutes of sunshine a day can cut your cancer risk up to 36%. That’s because sunshine helps your body create vitamin D – and vitamin D shuts down abnormal cells before they can become cancerous.

Because UV rays go right through clouds, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. And with snow and ice, 80% of those UV rays can be reflected back up at you. By comparison, grass only reflects 10% of UV rays. And all that ultraviolet light can damage your retinas and lead to issues like cataracts. So wear sunglasses, even in winter, and make sure they block 99% of UV radiation.

Go outside and stand in the sun! Researchers at the University of Manchester found that getting as little as 60-seconds of sunshine can reduce chronic aches and pains as much as 20%. That makes it as effective as most over-the-counter pain relievers. The researchers believe the combination of warmth and natural light triggers your brain to produce a flood of pain-killing endorphins. Being exposed to UV-rays also triggers production of vitamin D, which has been shown to reduce pain from arthritis and muscle aches.

Got pain? Get 60-seconds of sun. It’s that simple, even in the wintertime.

That’s because – from the moment we wake up, sleep-inducing chemicals are building back up in our brain all day long. But instead of reaching for the caffeine or sugar, just open a window or walk outside. 10 minutes of sunlight will have the same energizing effect as a nap.

The days are short and the weather is cold, and that combo can do a number on your MOOD.

It can leave you feeling depressed and lethargic. So, try these two happiness tips to get over the winter slump: Buy new light bulbs. Get compact fluorescent bulbs labeled “natural daylight.” They mimic UV rays and raise your serotonin levels. Also, exercise during DAYLIGHT hours. The exercise will lift your spirits, and so will the shot of sunshine.

Find all different brands of compact fluorescent bulbs at The Home Depot.

A little bit of sun is good for us.
