Because window glass doesn’t block the UVA rays that cause skin cancer. So they penetrate the skin more deeply – and the deeper layers of skin are where skin cancer is most likely to start. So if you sit within 6 feet of a sunny window, wear sunscreen every day – even on cloudy days.

Book it on a Saturday. Because the weather, and the air quality, will be better. NASA scientists say Saturdays are the sunniest days, thanks to air pollution. Because during the week, when most people commute, tiny particles from vehicle tailpipes and industrial smokestacks attract water droplets, forming rain and storms. On the weekends, there’s less pollution, meaning fewer storms, cleaner air, and sunnier days.

Go stand in the sun!

According to research from the University of Arizona, exposure to the sun’s blue light rays increases your brain’s ability to process information… guaranteeing it’ll get stored in your long-term memory. It activates the hippocampus; that’s the part of the brain that stores memories.

So, the next time you need to commit something to memory, head outside, and stand in the sun for a few minutes while you mull it over. You’ll cement it in your memory banks.

Now that the days are getting warmer, and we’re spending more time outdoors, keep this in mind: Be careful using your tablet computer or even your giant smartphone in the sun. You know how people in the 1950s and 60s would hold those silver tanning reflectors under their faces? Well the shiny surface of an iPad works the same way. It can increase your UV ray exposure by 85%… And a smartphone increases it by 36%. That’s according to the American Academy of Dermatology. So wear sunscreen every day on your face and neck – and be cautious about using your iPad outside on a sunny day.

Go outside and stand in the sun! Researchers at the University of Manchester found that getting as little as 60-seconds of sunshine can reduce chronic aches and pains as much as 20%. That makes it as effective as most over-the-counter pain relievers. The researchers believe the combination of warmth and natural light triggers your brain to produce a flood of pain-killing endorphins. Being exposed to UV-rays also triggers production of vitamin D, which has been shown to reduce pain from arthritis and muscle aches.

Got pain? Get 60-seconds of sun. It’s that simple, even in the wintertime.

If you feel tired all the time, but still find it hard to fall asleep at night, your cubicle may be to blame. Research at Northwestern University found that workers who didn’t have a window nearby – or a source of natural light – slept 47 fewer minutes a night, on average – compared to those who worked near a window. That’s because exposure to natural light helps synchronize our circadian rhythm, and boosts production of the sleep hormone melatonin at night.

So, what can you do if you work in a windowless office, shopping mall, factory, hospital or casino?

Lead researcher Dr. Phyllis Zee recommends spending at least a half hour a day outdoors – or by a sunny window – so you get the natural light you need to sync your hormonal rhythms with day and night. You’ll feel less daytime sleepiness – and be more ready for sleep at night.

I’ve got a list of surprising headache triggers and helpful remedies.

Stressful relationships can trigger a headache. That’s because when we’re anxious, we tend to take shorter breaths, leaving us oxygen-deprived. Our body tries to compensate by constricting blood vessels…And that constriction can cause head pain. So, when you feel overwhelmed, try the 2-5-5-5 method: Take 2 minutes, and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 5, then breathe out for 5.

Aromas. 1 in 50 headache sufferers are sensitive to specific “trigger smells”, like gasoline, tobacco, and perfume. If that’s you, carry a bottle of essential oils to sniff when you’re around trigger smells. Especially lavender, which has been shown to boost relaxation, or peppermint, which reduces pain.

A sunny day. According to the Northern California Headache Clinic, the glare of the sun bouncing off water, pavement, glass or snow interferes with the area of the brain that controls pain…Which can cause an instant migraine. So, try wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, and putting them on before you step outside.
