Is a sunscreen with a higher SPF best?

When it comes to sunscreens, don’t buy into this idea: The higher the SPF, the more protected you are from the sun. Dermatologist Dr. Steven Wang says SPF technically maxes out at around 30. And doubling SPF is like doubling up on umbrellas in the rain when one umbrella is enough. Plus, a higher SPF number gives us a false sense of security, so we’re more likely to stay in the sun longer. Instead, reapply sunscreen every two hours, even if you’re sitting in the shade, and wear a hat and other protective clothing when you’re outdoors.

…or played Frisbee and forgot to apply sunscreen… and now you’re a lobster. Here’s the first thing to do after you get a sunburn, according to dermatologist Joshua Zeichner from Mount Sinai Hospital: Grab cold SKIM or NON-FAT milk from the fridge, saturate a washcloth, wring it out, and apply it to your sunburn. That soothes because the milk coats your skin – instead of evaporating like water would – which helps repair the damaged outer layer. Milk protein also calms the skin and reduces inflammation, and skim or non-fat milk has more protein than whole milk. Out of milk? You can also use a cold compress of green tea to reduce inflammation.

Feeling stiff and achy?

Go outside and stand in the sun! Researchers at the University of Manchester found that getting as little as 60-seconds of sunshine can reduce chronic aches and pains as much as 20%. That makes it as effective as most over-the-counter pain relievers. The researchers believe the combination of warmth and natural light triggers your brain to produce a flood of pain-killing endorphins. Being exposed to UV-rays also triggers production of vitamin D, which has been shown to reduce pain from arthritis and muscle aches.

Got pain? Get 60-seconds of sun. It’s that simple, even in the wintertime.

Staying out of the sun! And according to the American Academy of Dermatology, protecting your skin from the sun has the greatest impact on how it ages – even more so than eating a healthy diet or exercising. The only thing that made people look equally as young was an obsessive use of sunscreen.

The study was done on hundreds of women, and those who avoided the sun looked up to 20 years younger than they actually were. And other supposed rules for maintaining a youthful complexion didn’t do diddly-squat – from drinking lots of water to sleeping well. Something to keep in mind now that it’s hot and sunbathing season is in full swing.

For your blood pressure: Get 20 minutes of daylight a day. That doesn’t mean baking in the sun… you can get enough UVA rays walking the dog – or sitting by a window to drink your morning coffee. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, people getting 20 minutes of daylight saw their blood pressure drop 2 points without changing anything else. The reason? UVA light helps nitric oxide circulate in your blood. And that regulates blood pressure and lowers your risk of stroke.

Slather sunscreen on your neck every day – even when it’s cloudy! That’s because the skin on the front of the neck is thinner than the skin on the face – so it’s more easily damaged by the sun. And a wrinkly neck is one area that’s hard to treat with plastic surgery! But according to dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, women who wear sunscreen on a regular basis have 24% fewer signs of aging on their neck.

To prevent burning when you’re out in the sun (even in the winter)…

you need to do more than wear sunscreen. Make sure your body lotion is unscented – and skip the perfume and cologne. Because the chemicals in scented products make our skin more sensitive to UV damage. They’re called volatiles and solvents.
Volatiles are the chemicals that make a liquid airborne. Without this, no one could smell your favorite perfume unless their nose made direct contact with your skin.
Solvents are what hold those volatile fragrance notes in the product so they don’t separate out in the bottle. But both of those things make skin more vulnerable to irritation in general – and when you add UV rays into the mix, you can come home with a serious skin reaction and burn.

Wear sunscreen…

If you’ve been out in the sun without sunscreen for an hour and forty minutes – you’ve suppressed your immune system by 50%. And when the body’s defenses are lowered, that’s what raises the risk of skin cancer… and can make people vulnerable to infections. That’s because too much UV radiation decreases the amount of T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that help keep our immune system strong. That’s according to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. Share that with someone you know who spends a lot of time outside.

Look at your right arm…

Count the moles you see. If there are more than 11, you probably have more than 100 moles all over your body. And that means you’re 5 times more likely to develop melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer. If that’s the case, get a full body skin check annually by a dermatologist. So why the right arm? Because it’s not the one that hangs out the car window when you drive – so the skin spots are more likely to be moles – and less likely to be freckles from sun exposure.

If you’re looking for something to blame for your wrinkles, look up.

Because the sun accounts for 80% of all skin aging. And the older we get, the more damaging UV rays become. Sun damage is what causes brown spots, yellowing, reduced skin elasticity and sagging. And just a 2% increase in skin damage ages a face by three years. If that’s not enough incentive to wear sunscreen, there’s the threat of skin cancer, too. So, slather on sunscreen every day.
