If you’ve already abandoned your New Year’s Resolution, it may be because you only made ONE. Try again right now, but make FOUR resolutions and start them all at once. A study from UC Santa Barbara found people who vowed to eat better, exercise more, sleep better, AND find time to meditate, were more likely to succeed with EVERY goal. It’s because complementary goals feed off each other. For example, it’s easier to eat healthier when you sleep better… and you’ll sleep better if you exercise and meditate. Bottom line: Making four resolutions at once makes you much more likely to succeed.

When you watch a TV show or movie – do you root for the underdog? If you answered “yes” – That’s a good thing! According to the journal Media Psychology, people who root for the underdog increase their own drive to succeed. Seeing a character struggle, and willing them to win or get ahead, makes us feel hopeful about our own lives. It gives us more motivation to pursue our goals, and that effect lasts for 3 days after we watch a program featuring an underdog.

Have you ever done this? You knew you had an important day ahead – but you stayed up until all hours binging on your favorite shows. Why did you sabotage yourself?

Well, Indiana University psychology professor Dr. Edward Hirt says, when we sabotage ourselves, it’s our subconscious way of guarding ourselves against failure. Because, by being sleep deprived, we can blame the failure on a lack of sleep instead of not being good enough, smart enough, or prepared enough. Dr. Hirt says self-sabotage is incredibly common. His studies show the people who are most likely to do it are those who think trying and failing is the worst possible outcome. So they’d rather not try if they don’t think they can succeed. But in reality, people have more respect for those who do their best – no matter how things pan out in the end – than those who don’t give it their all.

It may seem daunting – but you’re better off changing your eating and exercise habits at the same time. That’s from Dr. Abby King, a professor of health research at Stanford. She says when we make a big change, like revamping our eating habits – it takes a lot of time, effort and energy. So when it’s time to overhaul your exercise, you won’t have much motivation left to tackle it. But Dr. King says changing your eating and exercise habits at the same time will give both of them the momentum you need to succeed.
