You can blame your allergies on your ceiling fan! The flat blades pick up tons of dust and dirt, especially when they’re not spinning. So, regularly remove the grime with a moist cloth to keep your ceiling fan from scattering dust and dirt all over your bed at night.

…apply a mentholated rub the right way. In other words, DON’T swipe some under the nose. That can make airways swell and fill with mucus, which is the exact opposite of what you need and could trigger breathing problems. Instead, use something like Vick’s VapoRub as directed – on the chest or throat. And don’t use a menthol medicated rub on kids under the age of 2.

The herb thyme is your friend. It contains an oil called thymol that kills germs on contact and is an active ingredient in cold medications, like Vicks VapoRub. It can stop an infection short by activating white blood cells and boosting immunity. And if you’re already sick, thyme can reduce congestion, coughs and nasal irritation. So cook with thyme, or make tea. Add 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme to hot water, steep for 10 minutes, strain and sip. And for a stuffy nose, add thyme to boiling water, cover your head with a towel, lean over and inhale the steam.

Have you ever noticed that when you have a cold, your nostrils alternate being stuffed up? Why is that? The folks at Mental Floss got to the bottom of it, and in a nutshell: It’s because our nostrils split their workload. Throughout the day we have nasal cycles – and our nostrils take turns processing congestion and decongestion. And at any given moment, if you’re breathing through your nose, most of the air is going in and out of one nostril. Every few hours, things switch up and your other nostril takes over. Our nasal cycle is going on all the time, but when we’re sick, the extra mucus can make the nostril that’s on a break feel much more backed up.

It’ll unclog stuffy sinuses – and help you relax. Just massage your head for 2 minutes – or get a friend to do it. Concentrate on the spot at the base of your skull, where your hairline ends and your neck begins. According to experts at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Connecticut, that pressure point opens up sinuses, relieving congestion. It also stimulates the release of calming brain chemicals, so you’ll feel more relaxed.

Grab the horseradish! The condiment contains a sinus-clearing chemical that’s a lot like the one in over-the-counter decongestants. And you don’t even have to eat it! Experts say that a few sniffs from a jar will do just as good a job of clearing your sinuses.
