If you want to reveal 6-pack abs by the pool or at the beach – skip the crunches, and even the planks! We now know it’s all about the cardio. Exercise scientists from Auburn University did a study and found that when people did ab-exercises for 6 weeks, they didn’t lose ANY abdominal fat. That’s because we can’t spot-reduce fat. We lose it all over. However, consistent amounts of aerobic exercise – like running or swimming – combined with strength training and a reduced calorie diet DOES result in weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.

Try eating some papaya. The fruit contains an enzyme called papain – which has been shown to reduce bloat, gas, gastrointestinal upset and constipation. It soothes the digestive tract, and speeds up digestion by helping to break down protein.

Don’t save your core workout until the end of your exercise session. According to certified personal trainer Michael Wollpert, if you work your core at the beginning – like by doing planks – you’ll engage those muscles more for the rest of your workout. And that’ll help improve your balance all the way through, and help you maximize your effort.

Did you know that a growling tummy isn’t necessarily a hungry tummy? According to Dr. Ryan Shelton, all it means is that fluids and air are moving around in your intestinal tract. If you don’t want a noisy stomach – like if you’re going on a date – eat more slowly, and do more listening than talking, so you take in less air.

Have you ever woken up earlier than normal and felt nauseous?

There’s a good reason. Internist Dr. Keri Peterson says, just like our daily sleep and hormonal cycles, our stomach and digestive processes run on a daily rhythm. And during sleep, our stomach makes extra acid to move along whatever’s lingering in there. And by morning, that acid has emptied out. But if you wake up earlier than usual – or the middle of the night – that unfinished process can leave you feeling queasy. If that happens to you, Dr. Peterson says to eat a little something to neutralize the acid, and you’ll be feeling better in no time.

Have you ever choked on something, or had a coughing fit and said, “Something went down the wrong pipe!” That’s actually a fairly accurate expression, according to pulmonary specialist, Dr. Richard Wunderink. He says we have two tubes that start at the back of our throat… One is the esophagus that leads to our stomach. The other is our trachea, which goes to our lungs. And if a sip of something accidentally goes down your trachea, you start sputtering and choking to get rid of it. To prevent that from happening, simply take smaller sips.

Which is worse: Going to bed full, or hungry?

NYU sleep specialist, Dr. Rebecca Scott says going to bed full is worse. That’s because it can cause acid reflux, which can wake you up, or cause restless sleep. But going to bed with a growling stomach isn’t ideal either. Low blood sugar could also cause you to wake up in the middle of the night. So if you’re hungry before bed, eat a very small snack, like almonds or yogurt. The protein will digest slowly, so your stomach won’t rumble – but it won’t be too heavy or fatty and keep you awake.

If you get acid reflux, the best thing you can do is to eat less – and eat slowly. That’s the word from gastroenterologist, Dr. Marie Borum. She says people who get frequent heartburn are better off eating 5 smaller meals a day than 3 big ones.
And after a big meal, try not to lie down. But if you do, lie on your left side, which enables your stomach to empty properly. That way, less acid will back up into your esophagus and cause burning.

Exercise your stomach too!

Sucking in your gut isn’t cheating – it’s exercise!
That’s because pulling in your stomach engages your upper and lowers abs simultaneously. It can also strengthen your core and improve your posture. So go ahead and suck in your gut, on and off, for 5 minutes a day.

Regarding heartburn: How you eat is more important than what you eat. Heartburn’s caused by stomach acid getting into your esophagus. So, the fuller your stomach, the easier it is for acid to seep back into your throat. Eating slowly and decreasing portion size will definitely help. And since it’s easier for acid to find its way out of the stomach when you’re lying down, eat at least 3 hours before going to bed.
