…but the woman in your life may think otherwise. George Preti is an organic chemist with the Monell Chemical Sciences Center. He says, a woman’s hormones give her a sharper sense of smell – and biologists think it’s because women need it to subconsciously sniff out a mate’s genes, so they can produce healthy offspring. But on a day-to-day basis, it means a little bit of B.O. will be noticed by a woman faster than a man. And a woman may pick up on odors a man doesn’t even detect. And don’t bother trying to body spray your way out of it! Dr. Preti says, when they tested 32 different fragrances in an effort to mask odor – only 2 of them fooled women. The men who were tested? They were fooled by 19 of the scents! So, guys, if you’re deciding whether or not to shower before your date – shower. A woman can smell body odor a mile away.

If you’re tanned or sunburned, you may stink more than usual. Because your body uses the mineral zinc to repair sun-damaged skin AND reduce body odor. This means a lot of us are low on zinc in the summer when our body is using more of it to save our skin. So load up on zinc-rich foods, like oysters, lobster, shrimp, crab, lean beef and dark meat chicken. Vegetarian? Try lentils, sesame seeds, and cashews. Just 30 milligrams of zinc a day can inhibit the growth of stinky bacteria on the skin. And you’ll get plenty from 2 oysters, or 3 shrimp.

…which means yours are probably pretty gross by now. So here are some cleaning tips:

First: Seal them overnight in a bag of coffee grounds or dryer sheets, or for 24 hours in a plastic bag in the freezer. That’ll help remove odors, according to the Bright Nest blog.

Or put a couple of drops of cedarwood or sandalwood essential oil on the insole of each flip-flop. It’ll leave a fresh scent without irritating your feet.

And you can sprinkle rubber flip-flops with baking soda, and after an hour, rinse with water and vinegar. That’s the “classic de-stinking” technique.

This fix for foot fungus may work, but it may also make your feet stink to high heaven. It’s garlic! It’s antimicrobial, which is how garlic protects itself from being eaten by bugs and rotted by fungus. But that’s also how it can help athlete’s foot! Just crush 2 garlic cloves and mix with a few tablespoons of olive oil. Massage the mixture on your feet and between your toes. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry your feet thoroughly. Do that once a day until the rash goes away. The American Academy of Dermatology says garlic is better at fighting foot fungus than the most popular over-the-counter foot spray!

Did you know that in general, the stronger a food’s aroma, the less of it we’ll eat? And experts say that’s true whether the food’s sweet, spicy or savory. That’s because, when food has a strong odor, we think it has more calories – so we tend to eat more moderately. That’s why adding a dash of strong spices to hot food can help you lose weight.

…and solve your stinky foot problem: Fill a foot bath with hot water – drop in a black tea bag – and soak those smelly puppies of yours for 15 to 20 minutes. The hot water will dilate your blood vessels helping you relax… and the tannins in the tea act like an astringent, killing the bacteria that make your feet stink.

Winter and stinky feet go hand in hand…

Because stuffing your feet into closed-toed shoes increases sweating – since your feet can’t breathe. And each foot has about 125-thousand sweat glands. Now, I’m not suggesting you wear flip-flops in winter. Just switch from cotton socks to wool socks. Wool absorbs twice as much moisture as cotton and wicks it away from your feet. Then, when you get home, soak your feet in a warm foot bath with a couple drops of orange essential oil. The oil has antimicrobial properties that prevent the growth of isovaleric acid – which is what causes your feet to smell like cheese.

Does it smell like mildew? That means it’s growing enough mold to cause an allergic reaction. So get that towel into a washing machine, on hot with bleach, before you use it again. And when you shower, crack a window or turn on a vent. Moisture is fodder for mold, fungi and bacteria. But according to the University of Arizona, you can kill 90% of mold and bacteria in your bathroom simply by drying it out.

You’ll probably eat less overall! That’s because the stinkier the food, the less we eat! That’s because the odor is so strong, we’re fooled into thinking we’ve eaten more than we actually have – and feel full sooner.

It’s also good for stinky feet. If you soak your feet in strong, lukewarm black tea a‑half hour a day, you can reduce foot sweating and odor. The tea’s tannic acid closes pores and dries out your feet, like an astringent. And if you add a little peppermint oil to your tea foot bath, it acts like an extra odor buster.
