University of Washington researchers found a window view is far more soothing, and lowers a person’s heart rate farther, than watching TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds, instead of flowers, trees or water, it’s not going to lower your stress.

We’ve talked about how the scent of lavender is soothing and can help promote better sleep. But did you know you can EAT lavender, too… and it’s really good for you? Culinary lavender can help beat bloat and improve digestion. That’s because the polyphenols reduce bad gut bacteria. Dr. Christine Gerbstadt is a diabetes and nutrition expert, and she recommends sprinkling dried culinary lavender onto Greek yogurt, which also promotes good gut health.

Have you ever hit your head on something – or banged your knee into the coffee table – and instinctively started rubbing the sore spot? Well, there’s a reason we do that. It actually helps the injured area feel better faster. That’s according to the McGill University Pain Research Center. Because when we touch our skin in the spot where it hurts, it sends a different kind of signal to our brain, a soothing one – and it travels 100 times faster than pain signals do! So the next time you bang your head or hit your funny bone – rub it for some fast relief.

According to dermatologist Dr. Adam Friedman, honey has antibacterial properties that help soothe chapped lips, and heal wounds. For best results, he says dampen your lips with lukewarm water, then apply a thin layer of honey. Once the water dries, apply a layer of petroleum jelly, and let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes before removing it with a moistened cotton swab. Do that once a day, and Dr. Friedman says your chapped lips should be healed in no time.

Here are two ways:

• In England, the go-to for an upset stomach is peppermint tea. It relieves cramps and constipation by relaxing the muscles from the esophagus on down. Just don’t use it if you have heartburn. Because that relaxing effect can allow acid to splash back up.

• And in Indonesia, they reach for nutmeg. Try sprinkling half a teaspoon on mashed banana, or mixing it in yogurt. Nutmeg is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory – and calms stomachaches, spasms and diarrhea.

Massage your calves before bed. You’ll drift off almost twice as fast. University of Miami researchers say it works by stimulating the nerves in your legs that soothe the adrenal glands, and those are the glands that pump out stress hormones that can keep you awake.
