This may not come as a surprise – but now we know for sure: People who regularly consume sodas and energy drinks are more likely to be sleep-deprived. That’s according to a new survey of 18,000 adults by UC San Francisco… which found that people who usually slept about five hours a night, which is considered “short sleep” drank 21% more caffeinated, sugary beverages than people who got 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

And that’s a problem because other studies have linked short sleep with higher blood pressure and stress, increased levels of inflammation in the body, even poor kidney function. The researchers believe it’s because when your blood sugar is really high, your kidneys work overtime to get rid of it – which means you’re waking up repeatedly to pee. And because you’re sleep-deprived, you turn to highly-caffeinated energy drinks to get through the next day, which impacts your sleep the next night. So it’s a vicious cycle.

Bottom line: Want a better night’s sleep? Cut back on sugary, caffeinated foods and beverages.

Well, even if we don’t realize we’re doing it, the way our food sounds has a direct impact on how we think it tastes. And, generally speaking, we perceive crisp and crunchy food as tasting better than softer foods. Research in the journal Flavour found when people were asked to describe and evaluate different foods, the ones described as “crisp” were almost always rated as the most flavorful. So, think apples, bacon, potato chips, and even the crispy “fizz” of a freshly opened can of soda. The sound tells our brain if it’s fresh and good to eat, or if it’s spoiled and potentially bad for us. The thinking is that even when we KNOW chips are unhealthy, they still provide that satisfying “crunch” that our brain craves.

Visualize the ingredients in it! For example, if you’re wanting to avoid sugary soda, use your imagination, and visualize 10 sugar cubes stacked in a glass. Or, if a candy bar sounds tempting, picture test tubes filled with chemicals, like the preservatives and emulsifiers you can’t pronounce on candy bar packages. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, when we SEE what we’re actually considering consuming, we’re much less likely to want it.

Why do you crave weird food combos, like egg salad and grape soda? It’s probably because you loved them as a kid. According to the journal Appetite, past experiences of pairing sweet drinks with calorie-rich foods makes those pairings more tempting throughout our lives. The trick is to separate the two – and drink water with egg salad, and soda with broccoli. Your mind will break the association, and you’ll start to lose the craving and eat healthier.

Here’s a quick list of foods sleep doctors say to avoid before bedtime – otherwise, they’ll keep you wide awake all night:

•First: Obviously anything with caffeine. Like soda, coffee, and chocolate – even coffee and chocolate ice cream. Would you believe a scoop of coffee ice cream has more caffeine than a can of cola or a cup of tea? Also, caffeine can linger in your system for up to 14 hours! And can increase the number of times you wake up at night, and decrease the total amount of sleep you get.

•Another food to avoid at bedtime? French fries – or anything fried and fatty. Research shows that high-fat foods push your digestive system into overdrive. Which can keep you awake.

•Finally, avoid really spicy foods. It’s not because they cause heartburn. It’s because they increase your core body temperature – and we need our body temperature to drop to achieve quality sleep.

Take a pass on soufflés!
Whipped foods, and foods with a bubbly or airy texture can cause all those things. So if you have a date or have to be in close quarters with someone, say no thanks to the soufflés, whipped cream, cheese puffs and soda.

You know to avoid things like soda, sodium and broccoli if you don’t want to bloat.
But what if you’re already bloated? What then? Do this: Apply heat. Either from the inside, by sipping hot tea – or the outside, with a hot-water bottle or heating pad. The heat will relax your colon and help the gas work its way through your system. Or get some exercise. That can stimulate your GI tract and move the gas along. But maybe exercise solo – instead of at the gym.

If you’d like to increase the odds that you’ll choose healthy carrot sticks over crunchy potato chips, make your beverage water!
A study at the University of Oregon found that our brains tend to associate salty, high-calorie foods with sugary drinks. But when we drink water, we’re more likely to crave fresh fruits and vegetables.
