If you’d like to feel fuller, longer after you drink a smoothie – just add some oat bran to the mix… about 1/3 of a cup.
When volunteers drank smoothies, they felt significantly more satiated when it contained beta-glucan – a fiber found in oat bran… That’s compared to people who drank plain juice. Research says it’s because the fiber absorbs water, and slows digestion… And the slower we digest, the longer it takes to feel hungry again.

If you’re juicing and drinking smoothies – you may also feel like you’re starving all the time!

Here’s why, according to registered dietitian Beth Warren:
First: It’s because you’re not chewing anything. Liquid calories mess with the way we register fullness. Because chewing activates part of the digestive process. So if you’re sipping berries through a straw, you won’t have the same feeling of being satisfied as when you actually chew berries.
Also, we can drink faster than we can eat… Again, because there’s no chewing. But when we consume something faster, the brain doesn’t have time to register the “I’m full” signal. So you don’t feel full.

You don’t need fresh blueberries for your smoothie. Go ahead and use frozen ones. They’re even more nutritious. That’s because the ice crystals that form during freezing break down the plant cells. That means, when you finally eat them, the nutrients and antioxidants will be more easily absorbed.

Your love of smoothies could be wrecking your teeth!

Fruit smoothies can cause dental erosion – which can lead to tooth sensitivity and wear away the enamel. In fact, when researchers exposed teeth to an hour’s worth of sipping a smoothie, the enamel weakened by nearly 40%! That’s because smoothies can be highly acidic. So switch to a smoothie with milk or yogurt in it, too. Because the calcium will help minimize the enamel-softening effects of the acid.

If you want to feel full longer, eat your meals – don’t drink them.

A study in the journal Obesity found that people who ate whole fruit felt 30% fuller 3 hours later than those who drank a fruit smoothie. Why?
Because liquid gets digested faster than solid food, and whole fruit contains
a lot more fiber than a smoothie.
