Researchers at Loma Linda University had people watch a FUNNY 20-minute video or a neutral documentary. Those who saw the funny video performed better on memory tests. But you don’t even have to laugh out loud… because a genuine smile produces mood-boosting dopamine and endorphins. So the next time you need to perform well on a task – watch a video that makes you laugh or smile. As long as your smile is authentic – you’ll get the mood-boosting benefits.

Well, they love your smile! Researchers from the University of Helsinki say it gives your dog an extra shot of the feel-good hormone oxytocin. And that not only makes your dog happier – it makes them trust you more! And when you and your dog are both pumping out oxytocin, it increases your bond so you feel closer. So, go ahead and smile and laugh with your dog. They can read your happy expression and it makes them happy, too.

People who are cheerful and bubbly from the moment they roll out of bed every morning AREN’T faking it. Research at the University of Toronto found that early birds are actually happier than night owls. Interestingly enough, people over age 40 are much more likely to be morning people than teens or twentysomethings. This may be why older people tend to feel happier and more satisfied with their lives. It could boil down to “social jet lag”. That’s when you stay up late to socialize, then have trouble waking up early – and staying in sync with the typical 9‑to‑5 cycle of work and school.

Smile more. Researchers from the University of Southern Brittany in France studied busy intersections. If pedestrians made eye contact and smiled at drivers, they were HALF as likely to get hit! The researchers say eye contact alone is good – a blank stare made 50% of drivers stop. But that number went up to 75% when eye contact was accompanied by a smile. Because the mood boost the driver gets makes them kinder and more cautious.

People who smile a lot live longer than people who tend to look somber and serious… A whole seven years longer! Researchers at Wayne State University studied photos of hundreds of baseball players taken in 1952. Of the players who’ve since died, those who were seen smiling the most, lived an average of 80 years – while non-smilers lived to only age 73, on average. The researchers say it’s because being happy reduces stress, which also lowers our risk of heart disease.

For an instant happiness boost: Gaze into your dog’s eyes. It floods your brain with oxytocin, the feel-good cuddle hormone… and it does the same for your dog. That strengthens your bond and makes you both happier.
This may work with cats and other animals too! Try it and let me know.
