…because it’s not safe! Smartphone manuals say we should keep phones 10 millimeters away from our bodies! Because radiation exposure may exceed FCC standards if you keep your phone on your body – or press it to your head as you use it. I know that defeats the purpose of using it as a phone – but I guess that’s why there are headsets, earbuds, and speaker-phone-mode.

…the best thing you can do is cooperate. That’s according to former FBI agent Mark Safarik. He says forget everything you’ve seen in Clint Eastwood movies. After analyzing studies spanning 20 years, they all concluded the same thing – don’t try to fight the guy, or outwit him. To avoid injury, or worse, cooperate fully with the robber. He’ll probably take your smartphone or tablet – along with your wallet. But if you have the “find my iPhone” app or the “Avast” anti-theft app on your Android – activate it, tell the police, and let them go all Eastwood on the guy.

Your favorite electronic gadget could be to blame! That’s because the cases of some smartphones and tablets contain the metal nickel, which can trigger allergies. In fact, according to dermatologist Dr. Sharon Jacob, 25% of people who get tested for skin allergies are allergic to nickel. And when a lot of Dr. Jacob’s patients put a cover on their tablets and phones, the allergic reaction cleared up.

Again, see if you can eliminate an itchy rash just by getting a new smartphone cover!

Is your neck looking 10 years older than your face?

Your smartphone addiction could be to blame! Dermatologist Dr. Mitchel Goldman says constantly lowering your head to look at your phone can cause the skin on your neck to sag – and horizontal lines to form. That’s because the skin on the neck is thinner than on other parts of the body. It also has relatively few oil glands – unlike the face. Put all that together and your neck can become as wrinkly as a turtle. So, to prevent premature neck wrinkles, moisturize it daily, wear sunscreen, and hold your phone at eye level.

Keep your chin up! Staring down at our smartphones and tablets for hours every day can create new wrinkles across our neck and throat. The smooth-neck prescription: Hold your phone higher, think chin-level, not chest or waist-level. And apply a collagen-boosting cream every night to help reduce the appearance of lines and creases.

Now that the days are getting warmer, and we’re spending more time outdoors, keep this in mind: Be careful using your tablet computer or even your giant smartphone in the sun. You know how people in the 1950s and 60s would hold those silver tanning reflectors under their faces? Well the shiny surface of an iPad works the same way. It can increase your UV ray exposure by 85%… And a smartphone increases it by 36%. That’s according to the American Academy of Dermatology. So wear sunscreen every day on your face and neck – and be cautious about using your iPad outside on a sunny day.

Thanks to our smartphones, almost everyone experiences occasional eyestrain. But we can get rid of it in a pinch, literally! Just use your fingers to pinch the top of your nose, where the brow bones meet. That’s a natural acupressure spot called the “Third Eye Point” and practitioners say a firm 45-second pinch will increase blood flow to the eyes long enough to help them feel less irritated. Try it. Pinch your Third Eye Point to combat eyestrain.

That’s when you think your phone’s ringing or vibrating, even when it’s not. Well, would you believe that 89% of people experience that sensation?

Psychologist Michelle Drouin says it’s because we’ve become so accustomed to listening for our phones – and we place such significance on those texts, alerts and calls – that we’re hyper-alert, all the time. Like a mom listening for her newborn’s cry, there’s a part of our brain that’s always on-call, waiting for that sound from our phones. And we’re particularly likely to imagine those phantom dings and vibrations when we’re stressed or anticipating an important message.

So what can we do about it? Dr. Drouin says, for a few hours every day, move your phone out of reach and turn it off or to silent mode.

Blame your smartphone. Not because the blue light it emits is keeping you awake… it’s because it makes you breathe less deeply! Scientists found that people who used their phones for more than 4 hours a day had lung function that was over 30% lower than those who used their phones less. And just so you know, the average teenager is on their phone 6 hours a day, so 4 hours isn’t a crazy amount!
So why would phone use lead to poor lung function? Because we hunch our shoulders and bend our necks when using our phones. So our airway is restricted and we’re not fully expanding our lungs. As a result, we breathe more shallowly.

Smartphone squint! We spend 4 hours a day squinting at tiny phone screens, while scrolling through Twitter and Instagram. Which dermatologist Tina Alster says can kick-start – or increase – the formation of wrinkles in the corners of the eyes, under the eyes, and between eyebrows. Your best bet: Consciously relax your face while looking at your phone… Use anti-wrinkle cream containing retinol, which helps build collagen… And, if necessary, there’s always Botox.
