…an exercise created by the U.S. Navy during World War II will have you asleep in 120 seconds. Do this: Totally relax your face, drop your shoulders, and let your arms and legs go limp. Then, clear your mind by picturing yourself lying under an empty blue sky, snuggling in a black velvet hammock in a dark room, or repeating “don’t think, don’t think” for 10 seconds. It has a 96% success rate after 6-weeks of practice. If you don’t remember those steps, just Google “how to fall asleep in 120 seconds.” The technique is widely-written about, and you’ll be able to find it easily.

Just get some decent sleep! According to the UK’s University of Warwick, the mental and physical improvements of better sleep are similar to what lottery winners felt after landing a quarter-of-a-million-dollar jackpot!

The study on over 30‑thousand people lasted 4-years. And those who made positive changes to their sleep habits were significantly happier and healthier than those who relied on sleeping pills.

Keep flowers on your nightstand! Harvard psychology professor Dr. Nancy Etcoff says any fresh flowers are such a mood-booster, they can even prevent workday blues. Fresh flowers also reduce anxiety and stress, two major sleep disruptors – which means, you’ll be sleeping better and waking up happier within a few days. But replace the flowers when they start to wither and turn brown. Otherwise, they can make you feel that time is slipping away and things are out of control in your life.

If you’ve already abandoned your New Year’s Resolution, it may be because you only made ONE. Try again right now, but make FOUR resolutions and start them all at once. A study from UC Santa Barbara found people who vowed to eat better, exercise more, sleep better, AND find time to meditate, were more likely to succeed with EVERY goal. It’s because complementary goals feed off each other. For example, it’s easier to eat healthier when you sleep better… and you’ll sleep better if you exercise and meditate. Bottom line: Making four resolutions at once makes you much more likely to succeed.

People who spend quality time with friends sleep better at night. But those who feel lonely have trouble dozing off, and feel less energetic and less focused the next day. Research at the University of Rochester found that strong friendships reduce stress and anxiety, and make us feel more secure and relaxed. And that reduces activity in the brain area that stays vigilant at night. Basically, if we’re lonely, we feel vulnerable, insecure, and unprotected, even while we sleep, and part of our brain stays on alert for self-protection. So hanging with your friends during the day is your brand new sleeping pill.

Having a tuna sandwich for lunch one day a week – and grilled salmon for dinner one night – could be all you need to sleep better. The journal Sleep Medicine found people who have two servings of oily fish a week sleep deeper and more soundly than those who eat less fish. That’s because the omega‑3 fatty acids help the body produce more sleep-promoting chemicals. That reduces nighttime awakenings and increases vitamin D levels, which help improve sleep, too.

It turns out, the more fiber in your diet the better you’ll sleep. According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, people who munch more high fiber foods – like beans – spend more time in the deep, restorative stages of sleep. And in the study, people eating more fiber cut the time it took to fall asleep in half. And it only took one day for the changes to take effect. So why does fiber help us sleep better? Because it takes longer to digest, so the nutrients are released more slowly into the bloodstream. And that helps the body have an easier time winding down at night.

Sure, it raises body temperature – so when your core temperature drops again it triggers the production of sleep hormones. But there’s an even simpler reason. It exhausts us physically! And according to the University of Pennsylvania – which studied activity patterns of nearly half a million people – those who were tired from physical exertion slept better. And averaged a good 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep. So make sure you get your 30 minutes of exercise every day.

Go to bed wearing earplugs! A joint study between British and Swedish researchers found that people who feel foggy and slowed-up in the morning probably aren’t producing enough cortisol – a natural brain-energizer that wakes us up, and heightens our alertness. But wearing earplugs to bed blocks low levels of overnight noise – like nearby traffic, or a barking dog… And research shows that when the quality of our sleep improves, our brain churns out more cortisol in the morning – giving us more focus and energy.

Eat at the same time every day! People who don’t sleep well have a body clock that’s out of sync. But when your food intake is on a set schedule, it helps set your body clock. Your body and brain will know when to anticipate sleep each night and automatically start relaxing. As a bonus: Sleeping better will reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s. According to the American Medical Association, people who get a solid 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night have less of the plaque buildup in the brain that’s linked to Alzheimer’s.
