…and cause everything from pimples to wrinkles! Because stress hormones trigger inflammation and protein loss, which breaks down firming collagen. But there IS an antidote: Positivity! UCLA dermatology professor, Dr. Howard Murad, had female study participants read positive affirmations off note cards every day for a month. The result: The women had lower blood pressure, reduced hormonal stress levels AND better skin hydration – which is a major factor in youthful-looking skin. He calls it the brain-beauty connection. And he says thinking positive, and viewing obstacles as opportunities, will help make your skin younger-looking too.

…make yourself a cup of spearmint tea. The American Academy of Dermatology found consuming 2 cups a day reduced acne in patients by 25% in one month. And if they kept it up for 3 months – their acne was cut in half! That’s as effective as prescription medication but with zero side effects.
So what’s the magic in spearmint tea? It calms the skin – and has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. And spearmint is more effective than other types of mint… and kills the bacteria and yeast that cause skin problems.

Here’s something you’ll probably never hear from your dermatologist: Get intimate with your partner. According to dermatologist, Dr. Amy Wechsler, in a study of older couples, those who were intimate 3 times a week had skin that looked approximately 7 years younger. That’s because getting intimate releases human growth hormone, which makes skin firmer and more elastic.

You may have heard that putting hand sanitizer on a pimple will get rid of the bacteria and dry it up? NOT TRUE!
Dermatologists at Stony Brook University say putting hand sanitizer on acne will only make things worse. First, your skin will produce even more oil to compensate for the drying effect. And the active ingredients in the gel can irritate the skin on your face. As a result, you can get more pimples and redness as a rebound effect. So, don’t do it. Instead, use a product that’s made to fight pimples on your face that contains benzoyl peroxide.

What do yogurt, sauerkraut and miso soup have in common? They can clear up your skin! Numerous studies found adding good bacteria to our digestive tract can crowd out the bad bacteria that seeps through our pores and causes breakouts. Probiotics also reduce inflammation, which can make our skin erupt. So try eating a serving a day of yogurt with live-and-active cultures, sauerkraut or miso soup.

We’re always eating boneless, skinless chicken breasts. But is the skin THAT bad? No. Eating a chicken breast with skin will only set you back an extra 26 calories and 3 grams of fat. Plus, it gives a bland chicken breast more flavor, and provides half of your daily requirement of selenium – which is an essential mineral that wards off cancer.

Eat more watermelon!  It contains a tissue-healing antioxidant that acts like sunscreen. And eating two cups a day can cut your risk of sunburn by 26% – and cut your recovery time in half if you do get burned.

There’s a compound in raspberries that protects the skin from sun damage. It blocks the enzymes that break down collagen and cause inflammation. So, if you don’t want wrinkles, eat raspberries.

When the skin isn’t broken, using iodine, rubbing alcohol or peroxide is great for killing bacteria. But for a cut, it’s toxic to normal, healthy skin cells, and slows the healing process. According to family physician Dr. Neetee Gadgil, when peroxide bubbles, it isn’t just cleaning the wound. It’s also killing healthy skin cells, and blowing up red blood cells. The best way get rid of debris and bacteria in a cut: Hold it under running water.
