…or played Frisbee and forgot to apply sunscreen… and now you’re a lobster. Here’s the first thing to do after you get a sunburn, according to dermatologist Joshua Zeichner from Mount Sinai Hospital: Grab cold SKIM or NON-FAT milk from the fridge, saturate a washcloth, wring it out, and apply it to your sunburn. That soothes because the milk coats your skin – instead of evaporating like water would – which helps repair the damaged outer layer. Milk protein also calms the skin and reduces inflammation, and skim or non-fat milk has more protein than whole milk. Out of milk? You can also use a cold compress of green tea to reduce inflammation.

Unless you have a problem with dairy, don’t swap your cow’s milk for almond milk. That’s the advice of registered dietician Jaclyn London. She says they both have the same number of calories, calcium and vitamin D… but almond milk can have extras you don’t need or want. Like artificial ingredients to make it taste creamier… and added sugar, to sweeten it. So stick with regular ol’ milk, unless you have lactose intolerance. And in that case, look for unsweetened almond milk…… or go for unsweetened soy milk, which has as much protein as skim dairy milk.

What’s the difference between 1% and 2% milk?

It’s more than you think. Fat percentages of milk are based on weight, not calories. So two percent milk has way more than 2% of its calories from fat – it’s more like 35%. And one percent milk gets about 21% of its calories from fat. And skim milk? It gets zero calories from fat. Just something to think about the next time you run out to the store.

Well here are a few surprising things that can cause weight gain:

•Drinking low fat milk. It sounds like one of the healthiest beverages…But a study found that people who drank skim and 1% milk gained more weight than whole milk drinkers. Researchers say it’s because the fat in whole milk and 2% milk makes us feel fuller – longer. So we’re less likely to overeat throughout the rest of the day.

•Eating with friends. Studies show that when we eat with one friend, we eat about 35% more than we eat on our own…With 3 friends, our calorie consumption triples. Dr. Brian Wansink is a nutritional science expert. And he says that we overeat with friends because we tend to stay at the table longer, because we’re enjoying ourselves, so we continue to pick at our food. We also mimic our friends’ ordering habits. So, if they order dessert, we’ll order dessert. How can we hang out with our friends WITHOUT overeating? Be the first to order. Studies show that we tend to copy the first person who orders, whether they get a salad, or a burger.

Did you know that some people get breakouts caused by milk?

milk-breakouts

That’s according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. It turns out that skim milk causes the MOST skin flare-ups…Because fat-free milk is concentrated, so it contains more breakout-causing hormones. Dairy farmers also add whey protein to make skim milk taste creamier – which can cause breakouts.
Your best bet: Eat yogurt… Which causes fewer breakouts than any other milk product. Experts believe it’s because of yogurt’s probiotic bacteria.

Cut the fat in your diet. Simple switch from full-fat milk to skim, and from fatty cuts of meat to lean cuts. According to Tufts University, saturated fat slows your immune system’s response to germs.
