Take a brisk 15‑minute walk every day, followed by a hot, steamy 15‑minute shower. According to LiveStrong.com, exercise produces adrenaline, which shrinks swollen sinus membranes… and can drain congested noses as effectively as Sudafed! And regular exposure to hot steam reduces nasal inflammation, promotes drainage, and can help heal a sinus infection in just 72-hours.

Have you ever noticed that when you have a cold, your nostrils alternate being stuffed up? Why is that? The folks at Mental Floss got to the bottom of it, and in a nutshell: It’s because our nostrils split their workload. Throughout the day we have nasal cycles – and our nostrils take turns processing congestion and decongestion. And at any given moment, if you’re breathing through your nose, most of the air is going in and out of one nostril. Every few hours, things switch up and your other nostril takes over. Our nasal cycle is going on all the time, but when we’re sick, the extra mucus can make the nostril that’s on a break feel much more backed up.

Try this acupressure trick: Arrange your three middle fingers in a triangle, and apply pressure just above the bridge of your nose, also known as your “third eye.” Do that for 30 seconds and repeat as needed. Cynthia Ribeiro, president of the American Massage Therapy Association, says that pressure point breaks up tension in the sinus cavity and relieves sinus headaches.

• First: Calcium supplements and antibiotics. Because the calcium stops your body from absorbing the antibiotic. You can still take calcium, just do it at least 3 hours before or after your antibiotic.

• Also, don’t combine antihistamines and antidepressants. It can cause extreme drowsiness. So if you have allergies and you’re on antidepressants, ask your doctor what pills can clear your sinuses and relieve watery eyes without the sedating effects.

• Lastly, ladies, if you’re on the Pill, steer clear of St. John’s Wort. It can make oral contraceptives less effective… Because it breaks down estrogen, increasing the odds you’ll get pregnant even if you’re on the Pill.

Here’s a surprising new solution: Chew some sugar-free gum. Sinus infections occur when our nasal passages become swollen, making it more difficult for mucus to drain and flush away bacteria. And here’s why chewing a stick of sugar-free gum can help: Studies show a sweetener in sugar-free gum – called xylitol – blocks the bacteria that causes sinus infections. So it’s less likely to attach to our throat tissues, and travel into our sinus passages.

It’s not just an old wives tale! Chicken soup really is good for the common cold!

And here are 3 reasons why:

1. Chicken contains an amino acid that loosens mucus and improves respiratory function. So it’ll help you breathe easier…

2. Veggies, like carrots and potatoes, boost your immunity – so you can fight off infection.

3. The broth can help clear your sinuses! Clear, thin fluids, like broth, thin out your mucus. Plus, staying hydrated helps your body fight infection. And warm fluids work best – because both the steam and the warmth can contribute to clearing the mucus, which will relieve your upper airway.

Neurologists say they’re common and usually flare up as the plane is landing.

That’s because, as the cabin pressure drops as the plane descends, it can create pressure in the sinuses, triggering head pain.

So, how can you arrive at your destination headache-free? Doctors say about an hour before landing, take an anti-inflammatory painkiller, like ibuprofen or naproxen. And use a nasal decongestant spray to open up your sinuses so they depressurize as the plane descends.

horseradish

Grab the horseradish! The condiment contains a sinus-clearing chemical that’s a lot like the one in over-the-counter decongestants. And you don’t even have to eat it! Experts say that a few sniffs from a jar will do just as good a job of clearing your sinuses.

We’re more prone to headaches in the winter.

winter-headache

That’s because changes in temperature and barometric pressure are big triggers. They have an effect on nerves and blood vessels. Plus, the dry air this time of year can make you more prone to sinus issues that can also trigger headaches. The best thing you can do is to stay hydrated – and to keep a humidifier in your bedroom. That’ll help your sinuses. And if you know a storm is coming, pop some ibuprofen ahead of time.
