I’m all about brain health – and keeping our minds sharp as we age. And although doing puzzles, coloring, and playing an instrument are proven ways to keep neural connections firing, there are other things we can do in our daily lives that help.

Like, learning the words to your new favorite song. That exercises the parts of the brain responsible for focus and memory. Plus, the concentration required to pick out the lyrics releases brain chemicals that stimulate neuro-plasticity, which is the brain’s ability to form new neural connections throughout life.

Another way to improve brain health: Play catch. A study in the journal Nature Neuroscience found that catching and throwing require us to coordinate physical things like vision, balance, and timing, along with more abstract concepts, like spatial relations and anticipating future movements. And that means, practicing hand-eye coordination helps our body beef up the mental circuits that transmit data from one place to another.

If you don’t want to sound like a stereotypical granny or grandpa, with a creaky voice, sing more! According to the British Voice Association, people who sang once a week had voices that sounded steadier and smoother as they aged. Ear, nose and throat surgeon, Dr. John Rubin says a-third of people over 65 suffer from voice problems, including hoarseness and weakness. And we have less lung capacity as we age – so by age 80, our voice may be half the volume it was at age 20. But singing is like CrossFit for your voice. It helps you control air pressure and the movement of your vocal folds. And that can preserve your voice as you age.

Snorers, try these things to strengthen your throat muscles: Sing, or play the kazoo, the harmonica or the flute for 22 minutes a day. It’ll cut sleep apnea episodes in half within 4 months. That’s according to Swiss researchers, who say singing or playing a wind instrument tightens the muscles needed to keep your airways open while you sleep. And when your airway doesn’t collapse, your breathing is improved, your snoring is reduced, and you get a better night’s sleep.

This is how germs are spread!

We know that coughing and sneezing spreads germs. Now, researchers say, so do singing, whistling and laughing!

Virologists at Singapore’s National University Hospital say singing produces an even stronger, “more penetrating plume of infection” than coughing. How do they know? Because the researchers used a gigantic mirror and high-speed camera to watch the splatter of saliva… and they figured out exactly how far those flu droplets flew when someone was singing!

So what’s the point of this research? Researchers can apply it to how far apart hospital beds need to be to prevent airborne infection. But for us, we should steer clear of strangers who are whistling on their way to work – and maybe avoid close contact with singers on karaoke night! Keep a minimum distance of 20 feet… and know that viral droplets can stay suspended in the air for up to 10 minutes.

Sing while you’re behind the wheel! A recent survey from the UK’s University of Sheffield found that 63% of drivers who haven’t had an accident in more than four years listen to music while driving. And drivers who practice carpool karaoke are much less likely to experience road rage. Because music is soothing, calming and relaxing. And singing along to your favorite tunes – when you don’t have to try to remember the words – helps you better focus on the road.

It can cause “micro-arousals” – that repeatedly wake you up for a second or two. That prevents you from getting deep, restorative sleep. But there’s a fun way to combat the problem. Sing. In a study, people who sang every day for 20 minutes snored less and had deeper sleep. That’s because singing strengthens the muscles in the soft palate and upper throat – the ones that are the primary cause of snoring.

If you snore, start singing!

Research suggests that giving your vocal chords a 20-minute daily workout strengthens flabby throat tissues. Do that every day for 3 months and you’ll be half as likely to snore. And since the average daily commute is 23 minutes, try singing during your commute.
