So you’re sick – and you’ve been using the same tissue to blow your nose all morning. Is that a problem? Well, according to Dr. Wendy Bennett, an internist from Johns Hopkins, that ratty tissue won’t hurt you – but it could hurt those around you. Because each time you touch it, you’re touching your infected mucus germs – and then whatever you touch afterward will be contaminated with your virus. So grab a new tissue and use that. Or sneeze into your sleeve, since that’s less likely to touch other surfaces or people.

Did you know caramel apples could make you sick?

Research at the University of Wisconsin found they can be a breeding ground for the bacteria Listeria. And that shocked researchers. Because it was previously thought apples were too acidic, and the caramel coating too thick for bacterial growth. But the problem is the stick! Poking a hole in an apple creates just enough juice to breed bacteria. If you can’t resist a caramel apple, only eat one that was kept refrigerated – or made without a stick.

If you get airsick or are afraid to fly…

…you may want to skip midday flights. The reason? They’re the most likely to experience turbulence. Because there’s an increased likelihood of thunderstorms happening midday. And afternoon air gets bumpier, making you more likely to hit turbulence. As the night cools off, the air becomes steadier, and wind speeds are generally lower through the morning, making for a smoother flight.

…hug your loved ones more often! Psychology professor Dr. Thomas Joiner from Florida State University says, in studies, people who do the most hugging are less likely to get sick when exposed to a flu virus. It works because regular physical contact with other humans bolsters the immune system – by challenging it through exposure to other people’s microbes, which makes it stronger. Another reason hugs are a flu fighter? They reduce stress, which makes us more resistant to infections. So get hugging!

Can adults use toddler thermometers?

You think you may have a fever. But you only have one of those in-the-ear toddler thermometers. Will it work on an adult? Loyola University Medical Center says YES. In fact, many hospitals use ear thermometers on adults because they’re faster, more accurate and more comfortable than under-the-tongue models. They use an infrared beam to measure the temperature of blood vessels under the eardrum, where skin is thinnest. But since you can’t see inside your own ear, keep this in mind: For an accurate self-test, pull your ear up and back, and angle the tip of the thermometer in your ear, toward your nose. Because the eardrum is slightly forward in the ear canal.

When everyone around you is coughing and sneezing, try this trick to avoid getting sick, too: Set aside one evening a week for family movie night – and stick with it!

Researchers at the State University of New York found that regular R&R cuts our risk of illness by more than a third. Because kicking back and relaxing allows our frazzled nervous system to cut production of stress hormones, which weaken our immunity. Plus, when we’re relaxed, our body boosts production of germ-fighting antibodies, which is the first line of defense against illness-causing invaders.

Do you go to work sick?

There’s a name for when people go to work even when they’re sick… It’s called “presenteeism.” And employees do it because they don’t want to seem like slackers – or they have too much work on their plate to take a sick day… so they show up anyway. But know this: Sick workers are less productive, take longer to get better, and make a lot of their co-workers sick, too! So, if you have the flu – when should you go back to work?

Well, according to internist Dr. Keri Peterson, the unfortunate news is – when it comes to the flu, you’re contagious one day BEFORE you get symptoms. So you may infect people even if you stay home once the fever and chills strike. But stay home anyway – and Dr. Peterson says people are still contagious between 5 and 7 days AFTER the first flu symptoms start. That may seem like a really long time to stay home sick… But if you don’t take care of yourself, you could get complications from the flu, like pneumonia, and you’ll be out for even longer. So stay home until you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours – without the use of over-the-counter flu medications.

…they’ll be bringing home more than homework. They’ll also be bringing home the germs and viruses they pick up their friends. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, there’s a spike in illnesses among kids every Fall. So, remind your kids to wash their hands frequently. Research shows that kids who wash their hands at least four times a day at school end up being absent fewer days.

Here are a couple important numbers to remember the next time you fly, according to a new study from Auburn University:

First, the number 7. That’s how many days the superbug MRSA can survive in an airplane seat pocket. In other words: Think twice about using that pocket to store snacks and drinks.

Also, remember the number 3. That’s how many days bacteria like e.Coli can survive on tray tables.

The lesson? It’s time to start adding some antibacterial wipes to your carry-on bag.

It’s not unusual to feel nauseous when the weather gets really hot. It happens when our body is trying to regulate our core temperature. But you can cut that queasy feeling by sniffing some lemon essential oil or a fresh cut lemon. Stanford University researchers say that when our body struggles to keep our core temperature lower than the temperature outside, it can over-stimulate the nerves in the area of the brain linked to nausea. But taking 6 slow, deep whiffs of lemon essential oil can calm those nerves… and make our stomach feel calmer in as little as a minute.
