…but the woman in your life may think otherwise. George Preti is an organic chemist with the Monell Chemical Sciences Center. He says, a woman’s hormones give her a sharper sense of smell – and biologists think it’s because women need it to subconsciously sniff out a mate’s genes, so they can produce healthy offspring. But on a day-to-day basis, it means a little bit of B.O. will be noticed by a woman faster than a man. And a woman may pick up on odors a man doesn’t even detect. And don’t bother trying to body spray your way out of it! Dr. Preti says, when they tested 32 different fragrances in an effort to mask odor – only 2 of them fooled women. The men who were tested? They were fooled by 19 of the scents! So, guys, if you’re deciding whether or not to shower before your date – shower. A woman can smell body odor a mile away.

…but here’s a strong case for why it’s okay to pee in the shower:

First, the average adult has to “go” 7 times a day, and the average toilet flush uses about a gallon-and-a-half of water. If every North American flushed after every pee, we’d waste more than 1-TRILLION gallons of water a year.

So, what if we “go” in the shower? From a germ standpoint, studies show there’s ZERO risk for getting sick since most germs wash right down the drain. But we’d save at least one flush a day. And mathematicians at IFL Science figured out if we all did this, every day, we’d save enough water to fill almost 300-THOUSAND Olympic-sized swimming pools every year!

Ladies, are you seeing more hair going down the shower drain than usual?

Don’t panic. It doesn’t necessarily mean your hair is thinning or you’re going to end up with bald patches. Dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco says the average person loses about 40 strands of hair a day – to make room for the new strands coming in underneath. And most of it sheds when you shampoo. But since women are washing their hair less frequently these days – thanks to dry shampoo – it generally means more hair is coming out with every wash. Which means, if you only wash your hair once a week, you could be losing 200 hairs during that single shower – which can really seem like a lot.

So, when should you worry? If you’re losing a thousand hairs a day, that would be considered abnormal. If that’s happening, Dr. Fusco recommends putting the day’s “hair harvest” in a plastic sandwich bag – and taking it to your dermatologist to discuss it.

If there’s a loofah in your shower, toss it.

loofah-wp

Because it’s a germophobe’s nightmare. Here’s how bad it is, according to dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman. She says, with every use, you’re transferring the bacteria from your skin to the loofah. And because the scrubber has so many nooks and crannies, your dead skin cells get trapped, and bacteria starts multiplying, thanks to the moisture and a lack of air circulation. That means, every time you scrub with a loofah, you’re just spreading around the bacteria you washed off yesterday.
Plus, scrubbing too hard can literally make tiny scratches in your skin, forcing the bacteria through the wounds, which can make you sick or give you an infection. If you can’t give up your loofah – make sure you use a natural one… and sanitize it the same way you would your kitchen sponge. Zap it in the microwave while it’s wet for 20 seconds once a day.

Does it smell like mildew? That means it’s growing enough mold to cause an allergic reaction. So get that towel into a washing machine, on hot with bleach, before you use it again. And when you shower, crack a window or turn on a vent. Moisture is fodder for mold, fungi and bacteria. But according to the University of Arizona, you can kill 90% of mold and bacteria in your bathroom simply by drying it out.

If you want to boost your brainpower, shower with your eyes closed… And grab the soap and shampoo without looking. Or find your toothpaste and load up your toothbrush using only your sense of touch. That’ll give you a brainpower boost by taking your mind off auto-pilot. Because when we do routine things in a new way, it immediately stimulates the growth of new nerve cells that keep the brain flexible, while improving memory and focus.

To avoid an inflamed cornea, don’t wear your contact lenses when you shower or swim. Because bacteria-filled water can get trapped under your lenses, leading to an inflamed cornea. It’s painful – and it could even cause blindness. And nearly a million people get it every year. If you need to wear contacts or you forget to take them out – after you get out of the water, disinfect them, ASAP. Or if your contacts are the one-day disposable kind, throw them away after a shower or swim, and put in a fresh pair.

That’s what our friend, germ specialist Dr. Philip Tierno wanted to know! He recently surveyed the hygiene habits of more than 20,000 people across North America. Here’s what he learned:

  • Let’s start with: Your bed. Dr. Tierno recommends changing your pillowcases and sheets every week, to guard against the build up of dust mites, and lower your risk for bed bugs.

But this survey found that at least one-in-four people wait a month or more to change their bedding.

  • Next: Your shower. Dr. Tierno says bathtubs and shower stalls need to be scrubbed and disinfected weekly, to remove the build-up of “biofilm.” That’s the thin layer of dirt, sweat and grime that you leave behind every time you step out of the shower. But this survey shows that about half of all people wait anywhere from a month to six months to scrub the tub.
  • Finally, how hygienic is your fridge? Dr. Tierno says refrigerators should be cleaned at least once per month to limit your exposure to sickness causing E-coli and salmonella. But a whopping 40% of people surveyed say they wait anywhere from three months to a year before cleaning their fridge.

Did you have a long week and want an easy way to de-stress?

Take a shower! Just 10 minutes under a blast of hot water is enough to boost the production of the calming chemical oxytocin, and it slashes your stress hormone, cortisol. Studies have found it’s so effective, it can hold off stress for 12 hours.
